Notes: Summary Some structurally different compounds were examined for their ability to remove manganese as their chelates from brain, liver and testis and the sub-cellular fractions of brain and liver of manganese administered rats. An attempt was also made to cordate the removal of the metal with the recovery of altered activity of succinic dehydrogenase in these organs. While all the compounds were able to remove the metal significantly fromin vivo brain, liver and testis, they could fully restore the enzyme activity only in brain. However, there was no significant improvement in the altered morphology of the tissues in eight days of treatment with the chelating agents.

Notes: Summary Effect of 1–200 potencies of ten homoeopathic drugs on the spore germination ofPestalotia mangiferae, the causal organism of banana fruit rot, was studied. On the basis of results of in vivo studies with inhibitory doses of drugs, Lycopodium clavatum potency 190 has been recommended for the control of the disease.

Notes: Abstract The perturbation method of Lindstedt is applied to study the relativistic nonlinear effects for an elliptically polarized transverse monochromatic wave in a cold dissipative plasma in the absence of a static magnetic field. Amplitude-dependent wave-length and frequency shifts including relativistic correlations are derived.

Notes: Summary A group of fifty-seven varieties of Linum usitatissimum L. collected from different geographics sources was studied to understand the nature of genetic divergence using Mahalanobis's statistical distance (D2). Varieties having genetic similarity were grouped into fifteen clusters. Most of the clusters at individual level included varieties of different geographical regions. However, Argentine and Indian types formed separate and distinct constellations. The Indian group was situated at a maximum distance from Argentine and US groups, and was nearest to the Australian group. For improvement of Indian linseed, hybridization of indigenous types with Argentine and US types might result in superior recombinants. 84.64% of the total divergence was attributable to plant height and seed size, which are based characteristics used in classifying the species into oil and flax types. Since it is difficult to compute D2 values among large numbers of germplasm collections, another relatively simple and easy method, the metroglyph technique, was tried upon the same set of fifty-seven varieties. Comparisons between the results of the two analyses revealed the striking similarity as regards to group arrangement. It has been suggested that the metroglyph technique would be suitable for preliminary grouping prior to undertaking D2 analysis.

Notes: Polyethyleneglycol of molecular weight 6000 was treated with 4-phenoxy-3,5-dinitrobenzoyl chloride in warm toluene. The product of this reaction is a white crystalline solid containing 0.1-0.2 mmol of labile phenoxy groups per gram of polymer derivative. In aqueous buffers of pH 7, the phenoxydinitrobenzoyl polymer reacts rapidly with side-chain sulfhydryl groups of cysteine, but very slowly with other functional groups found in polypeptides, yielding peptide-polymer compounds in which the peptide and polymer are linked by a thiol-sensitive dinitrophenylene bridge. Both small synthetic peptides and the B-chain of bovine insulin thus linked to polyethylene glycol are soluble in water and in some organic solvents. An arginine-containing peptide bound to the polymer was hydrolyzed by trypsin at the arginyl bond, indicating that the linear polyethyleneglycol support does not restrict access of enzymes to bound peptides. Release of peptides from the polymer is rapidly accomplished by treatment with thiols at pH 7 in aqueous solutions.
