    Notes: The Bond technique was used to measure the lattice parameter of the red transition-metal oxide, ReO3, as a function of temperature. At 298 K the lattice parameter is 3.7477 (1) Å. The thermal expansion is linear with temperature between 291 and 464 K and a linear coefficient of thermal expansion of 1.1 (1) × 10−6 K−1 was fit to the data.

    Notes: Abstract The Generalized Brillouin Theorem Multiconfiguration Method (GBT-MC) of Grein and Chang is extended and applied to the calculation of excited states. Orthogonality constraints to lower states as well as second-order interaction effects of states lying close together have been taken into account. In this way quadratic convergence can be guaranteed. Difficulties with coupling coefficients and Lagrangian multipliers of SCF methods can be circumvented. Test calculations have been performed on valence electron excited states of C, H2O, and CH2O, and on core excited states of Li.

    Notes: Abstract Raman spectra of aqueous solutions containing Sr2+ and NO 3 − exhibit lines characteristic of Sr(NO3)+ and Sr(NO3)2 in addition to those of the solvated nitrate ion. Intensities have been measured, and the quantities nobs, the average ligand number, andC F, the concentration of free nitrate ion have been evaluated. From these data two cumulative formation constants have been estimated for 25°C: β1=0.76±0.10 and β2=0.10±0.02. The dependence of the results on experimental limitations is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract During the AIDJEX Main Experiment, April 1975 through May 1976, a comprehensive microwave sensing program was performed on the sea ice of the Beaufort Sea. Surface and aircraft measurements were obtained during all seasons using a wide variety of active and passive microwave sensors. The surface program obtained passive microwave measurements of various ice types using four antennas mounted on a tracked vehicle. In three test regions, each with an area of approximately 1.5 × 104 m2, detailed ice crystallographic, dielectric properties, and brightness temperatures of first-year, multiyear, and first-year/multiyear mixtures were measured. A NASA aircraft obtained passive microwave measurements of the entire area of the AIDJEX manned station array (triangle) during each of 18 flights. This verified the earlier reported ability to distinguish first-year and multiyear ice types and concentration and gave new information on ways to observe ice mixtures and thin ice types. The active microwave measurements from aircraft included those from an X- and L-band radar and from a scatterometer. The former is used to study a wide variety of ice features and to estimate deformations, while both are equally usable to observe ice types. With the present data, only the scatterometer can be used to distinguish positively multiyear from first-year and various types of thin ice. This is best done using coupled active and passive microwave sensing.

    Notes: Summary Radiation induced semi-dwarf mutants derived from five japonica type varieties of rice were studied with regard to their photoperiod-sensitivity, thermo-sensitivity and the number of days to heading. The experiment was carried out under the natural conditions at Taipei. The coefficient of photoperiod-sensitivity (T.D.M.) and thermo-sensitivity (byx. z and byz. x) as developed by Oka (1954) were estimated for the mutants in comparison with their original varieties. It was observed that these various physiological characters could be altered rather easily by mutations. Mutants showed wider ranges in both positive and negative directions than their original varieties in all the physiological characters studied. Even though heading date depends on both photoperiod-sensitivity and thermo-sensitivity, it was estimated which of the two contributed more to the induced earliness in each mutant. This offers a basis for selecting early maturing lines of rice.

    Notes: Abstract Learning environments have been studied less thoroughly in European universities than they have in American colleges and universities. Several research strategies which have been developed in the United States are discussed. One strategy, adapted to analyze the special conditions found in European universities, and an instrument which provides evidence about student perceptions of their environments, are described. The results of a study of one university in the Netherlands indicate that there are distinctive atmospheres found in various departments; departments differ from one another in understandable ways, and each department has its own kind of educational problems. It is argued that systematic analyses of learning environments might identify problems in universities and permit solutions to be found so that more effective educational contexts may be created.

    Notes: The Solvent mixtures of acetone and ethanol (swelling agent) were selected for the preparation of cellulose acetate dialysis membranes using the solubility parameter concept. Increased concentration of ethanol or decreased concentration of cellulose acetate in the formulation resulted in membranes with higher dialysis rate constants but with decreased tensile strengths. The membranes prepared from 20 g of cellulose acetate per 100 ml of mixed solvent of 59.9 mole-% acetone and 40.1 mole-% ethanol were comparable to Cuprophane membrane but were better than those prepared by using formamide as a swelling agent.
