    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung In diesem Artikel entwickeln wir direkte und iterative Algorithmen für die Lösung von Differenzen-Approximationen der Poisson und Biharmonischen Gleichungen über einem Quadrat, wobei eine Anzahl paralleler Arithmetikeinheiten verwendet wird. Unter der Annahme eines [n, n] Netzes zeigen wir, daß direkte Algorithmen für die Poisson bzw. Biharmonischen Gleichungen 0(logn) bzw. 0(n) Schritte benötigen. Der entsprechende Gewinn über die sequentiellen Algorithmen beträgt 0(n 2) bzw. 0(n 2logn). Wir vergleichen außerdem die Effizienz dieser direkten Algorithmen mit parallelen SOR und ADI Algorithmen für die Poisson Gleichung, und mit einer parallelen halb-direkten Methode für die Behandlung der Biharmonischen Gleichung als eines gekoppelten Paares von Poisson Gleichungen.
    Notes: Abstract In this paper we develop direct and iterative algorithms for the solution of finite difference approximations of the Poisson and Biharmonic equations on a square, using a number of arithmetic units in parallel. Assuming ann×n grid of mesh points, we show that direct algorithms for the Poisson and Biharmonic equations require 0(logn) and 0(n) time steps, respectively. The corresponding speedup over the sequential algorithms are 0(n 2) and 0(n 2logn). We also compare the efficiency of these direct algorithms with parallel SOR and ADI algorithms for the Poisson equation, and a parallel semi-direct method for the Biharmonic equation treated as a coupled pair of Poisson equations.

    Notes: Summary The cyclic sulfonium zwitterions (I) are very effective catalysts for the cyclotrimerization of isocyanates. Under certain conditions (high concentration of isocyanate in the reaction system or high reaction temperature) cyclic sulfonium zwitterions act as anionic initiators. This behavior is due to the reaction of the isocyanate with stabilizing molecules of water of cyclic sulfonium zwitterions followed by rapid polymerization of the initiator. This phenomenon can be easily utilized in the one-step preparation of stable NCO-terminated oligomers of difunctional isocyanates.

    Notes: Summary A fraction (brA), which causes resorption of fetal rat bones in vitro, has been concentrated from bovine serum albumin by anion exchange column chromatography on DEAE Sephadex. This active fraction has also been prepared using DEAE Sephadex A-50 by a batch method with a 0.09M NaCl, 0.1M TRIS buffer, pH 8.35. BrA was 10–30 times more potent than the original albumin. The retained material, which constitutes the bulk of the protein and has less activity than the original albumin, elutes with 0.45M NaCl. Similar treatment of serumα,β or γ globulins does not yield brA. Further enhancement of the bone resorbing activity of brA can be obtained with (NH4)2SO4 fractionation or extraction with CH3OH∶CHCl3. Heating at 55° C for 2 h or at 100° C for 10 min does not affect the activity; overnight incubation with protease destroys the bone resorbing effect. The bone resorbing activity is not removed by dialysis and does not correlate with the protease activity of the fraction. The action of brA is inhibited by 3 mM PO4, 1 μg/ml calcitonin or glucagon, 10−7 M dexamethasone or 0.02 μg/ml actinomycin D. The bone resorbing activity of brA is partially inhibited by 10−7–10−5 M indomethacin. PTH did not elicit bone resorption when added to cultures incubated in chemically defined medium supplemented with 0.1 mg/ml brA. However, brA did not inhibit PTH-induced resorption.

    Notes: Abstract Staining of chromosome preparations of Chinese hamster-human hybrid cells and mouse-chimpanzee hybrids with alkaline Giemsa has yielded color differentiation of the interspecific chromosomes. Bicolor chromosomes, indicating apparent translocations also are observed for each of these hybrids. The specific color differences observed provide a rapid means of recognizing and aiding in the identification of the interspecific chromosomes and apparent translocations in these somatic cell hybrids.

    Notes: Abstract A model is constructed to analyze adhesive bond failure at the tip of an interface crack. The model is based on the assumption that there are zones of bounded cohesive tensile and shear stresses near a crack tip. Within the context of certain broad a-priori assumptions on the distributions of certain stress and displacement components in the cohesive zones, the requirement thatall stresses in the two materials remain bounded provides a method to compute the specific details for these zones. It is assumed that bond failure occurs when the extension of the bond fiber at the crack tip exceeds a critical value. For an interface crack in a uniform tension field computations for two alternate formulations suggest that this failure criterion is independent of the precise distribution of the cohesive stresses, but rather depends only upon their averaged values. Combined loading with a dominant tensile component has also been analyzed. If the critical extension of bond fibers and the maximum value of the cohesive tensile stress are known, the model provides the maximum allowable interface stresses for given crack dimension and material parameters.

    Notes: Saccharomyces cerevisiae was grown under aerobic and substrate-limiting conditions for efficient biomass production. Under these conditions, where the sugar substrate was fed incrementally, the growth pattern of the yeast cells was found to be uniform, as indicated by a constant respiratory quotient during the entire growing period. The effect of carbon dioxide was investigated by replacing portions of the nitrogen in the air stream with carbon dioxide, while maintaining the oxygen content at the normal 20% level, so that identical oxygen transfer rate and atmospheric pressure were maintained for all experiments with different partial pressures of carbon dioxide. Inhibition of yeast growth was negligible below 20% CO2 in the aeration mixture. Slight inhibition was noted at the 40% CO2 level and significant inhibition was noted above the 50% CO2, level, corresponding to 1.6 × 10-2M of dissolved CO2 in the fermentor broth. High carbon dioxide content in the gas phase also inhibited the fermentation activity of baker's yeast.

    Notes: An experimental study was carried out to investigate the effect of mixing on the state of dispersion and rheological properties in the two-phase flow of polymer blends. For the study, blends of polystyrene and polypropylene were used, and two mixing devices were employed: a single-screw extruder combined with a “static mixer,” and a twin-screw compounding machine. Materials of various blending ratios were extruded at a constant temperature (200°C) through a capillary die having an L/D ratio of 20 (D = 0.125 in.). The state of dispersion in the two-phase system was investigated from pictures taken of the microstructure of the extrudate samples. It was found that different mixing devices have a profound influence on the state of dispersion of one polymer in another. Also determined were the rheological properties of the two-phase system investigated, from wall normal stress measurements. Our results show that, when shear stress is used as a parameter, the melt viscosity goes through a minimum, whereas the melt elasticity goes through a maximum. This is regardless of the type of mixing device employed, although the shapes of the curves are affected by the type employed. It is suggested that shear stress, instead of shear rate, be used in correlating the viscoelastic properties of two-phase polymer systems.

    Notes: An experimental study was carried out to investigate the moldability of polymer blends which form two phases in the molten state and the effect of mixing on the morphology and mechanical porperties of molded specimens. Blends of polystyrene with polypropylene and blends of polystyrene with high-density polyethylene were used for this study. A plunger-type injection molding machine (Van Dorn) was employed for molding specimens. To improve the mixing performance of the plunger machine, a Static Mixer (Kenics Corp., Super Nozzle) was installed between the heating cylinder and the sprue. A number of different molding conditions (injection pressure, temperature, injection time, cooling time) were varied, and molded specimens were collected under each molding condition. The specimens were used for studying the degree of dispersion in the blends and for determining the mechanical properties. A differential thermal analysis (DTA) experiment was also carried out to determine the degree of dispersion of the blends in molded specimens. It was found that a linear correlation exists between the blend composition and thermal spectra area of the blends tested.
