Notes: Summary Naturally-occurring growth stress patterns in timber are modified by cutting. Stresses in cut timber may cause destructive cracks and splits. This research uses a three-dimensional finite element method to study how non-axisymmetric cuts affect the stress pattern. The results show that some oblique cuts reduce high stresses near the pith. Experimental work supports the calculations.

Notes: Summary The ultrastructural features of non-neuronal cells associated with Auerbach's plexus in the stomach, ileum and colon of the guinea-pig have been examined. Apart from Schwann, mast and interstitial or fibroblast-like cells, two other cell types are described that do not appear to have been reported previously. Of these two cell types, one was found external, but close to, the plexus and contained large granular vesicles. The other cell type contained numerous glycogen-like granules, was situated close to or within axon bundles and had processes that extended within and peripheral to nerve bundles as well as being close to smooth muscle cells. Although axon varicosities were opposed to both the processes and cell body of the second type of cell, synaptic-like contacts were not observed.

Notes: Summary The ultrastructural features of nerve cell bodies and axon profiles within Auerbach's plexus in the stomach, ileum, caecum and colon of the guinea-pig have been examined. Nerve cell bodies have been tentatively classified into nine different types according to their size, distribution of organelles, location and relationship to satellite cells. Except for cell size, no attempt has been made to correlate ultrastructural with light microscopical observations. On the basis of vesicular size, shape and content, eight morphologically distinct types of axon profile have been identified as well as two profile types which are thought to reflect different physiological conditions. The axons contained various populations of small, mostly granular vesicles; small, round agranular vesicles; small, flattened vesicles; large flattened or elongated vesicles; and three types of large vesicle with granular contents distinguished by size. Some correlation between types of axon profile and two types of nerve cell body was recognized. However, more than one type of axon profile usually formed synapses with one type of cell body, and a precise correlation was not determined.

Notes: Finite element buckling analyses of plates are performed by means of quardrilateral elements having 12 degrees-of-freedom. It is found that if the plate is capable of appreciable transverse shear deformation, initial-stress stiffness matrices that represent the lateral dispalcement by cubic polynomials do not yield convergence to correct results. An initial-stress stiffness that works satisfactorily for both homogeneous and sandwich plates is formulated. A Fortran listing of the associated subroutine is provided.

Notes: A finite element may satisfy all convergence requirements and work well except for being too stiff or too flexible when the mesh is coarse. Here we discuss a technique for softening or stiffening such elements, provided that they have internal degrees-of-freedom. The technique is applied to a previously derived plate element, and the element is found to be much improved.

Notes: A method is proposed for making overly stiff elements more flexible. The central idea is quite simple and is illustrated by application to a sample element, whose behaviour is greatly improved. The effort needed to soften an element is very small if its stiffness matrix is naturally produced with reference to generalized co-ordinates before a final transformation to nodal displacement degrees-of-freedom.

Notes: Four new ways to relieve the excessive bending stiffness of linear elements are described, and incorporated into plane elements. All satisfy the ‘patch test’. The new elements are compared with existing elements in test problems. Application to three-dimensional problems is proposed.

Notes: We introduce a finite element model for stress analysis of threaded connections. Instead of modelling individual threads, the thread zone is replaced by a layer of elements with orthotropic properties. The principal directions of orthotropy depend upon the thread geometry and upon the direction of load, which is not necessarily known a priori. Both conventional and tapered threads are considered. The latter problem is nonlinear, as the number of threads in contact is a function of the load. Numerical results for conventional and tapered threads agree well with theoretical and exeprimental results in the literature.
