Notes: Abstract From a bloom forming blue-green alga, Anabaenopsis raciborskii, spontaneous mutants, which had lost the ability to form gas vacuoles have been isolated; the mutant frequency was 4.8×10-3. The filaments of gas vacuole-less mutants settled at the bottom of flasks in liquid culture media unlike the parent alga. The growth and nitrogen fixation were comparatively poor in the mutants.

Notes: Summary In this laboratory and elsewhere, cord factor or some less complex analogue has been found to be an important constituent of agents for suppression and immunotherapy of cancer. In further attempts to delineate structural requirements, we have tested several such analogues, in combination with the optimum quantity (150 μg) of glycolipid from an Re mutant salmonella (Re glycolipid), for ability to produce regression of transplantable one-week-old line-10 tumors in guinea pigs. The synthetic diester, trehalose 6,6′-dipalmitate, has been reported to be a useful antibacterial prophylactic and a tumor-suppressive agent, but neither alone nor in combination with Re glycolipid was it effective in therapy of established line-10 tumors, even in doses up to 1500 μg. Trehalose myocolates (cord factor, P3) were also ineffective when given alone, but as little as 15 μg of P3, combined with Re glycolipid and oil droplets, produced a high rate of regression. Some analogues of higher molecular weight were effective but, within the limits of these experiments, only when the fatty acid residues contained side chains at the alpha carbon atom. It was striking that a naturally-occurring 6,6′-trehalose diester of a branched chain fatty acid(s) containing the carbon equivalent of two condensed palmitic acid residues was as effective as any of the higher-molecular weight compounds, including the mycolates. Thus, it appears that there may be requirements for a certain molecular size and/or for a particular molecular conformation. Only such a compound, in conjunction with Re glycolipid or other suitable immunogen, has been found to bring about complete cures, including regression of the primary tumor, elimination of metastases in the regional lymph node, and specific systemic immunity to rechallenge with the line-10 tumor.

Notes: Summary The free enrgies of transfer (ΔG t 0 ) of H+, Cl−, Br−, I− and SCN− ions from water to 10, 20, 30 and 40% dioxanewater mixtures have been studied from potentiometric measurements. For anions the ΔG t 0 values are in the order Cl−〉Br−〉SCN−〉I−.

Notes: Abstract Patterns of Hoechst 33258 fluorescence have been studied in grasshopper chromosomes. At metaphase of mitotic as well as meiotic divisions — when chromosomes were maximally compact — all the chromosomes fluoresced brightly but no differentially fluorescing regions were detected. However, when all the chromosomes, except the X, were highly extended at pachytene and diplotene stages a distinct differential fluorescence was observed: only the centromeres of the autosomal bivalents fluoresced brightly whereas the entire X univalent showed bright fluorescence. Restriction of differentially bright fluorescence to the more condensed regions of chromosomes suggests a modulatory role for chromosome condensation in the production of Hoechst fluorescence. This suggestion was further strengthened by the substantial quenching of fluorescence caused by removal of chromosomal proteins following treatment with H2SO4. Similarly, post-C-band-treatment staining with Hoechst also led to quenching, though now the centromeres of the chromosomes, including the X, retained their differential fluorescence. It is proposed, therefore, that in grasshopper chromosomes, H-fluorescence is modulated by chromosome condensation brought about by differential ratios of DNA/protein at different chromosome regions and at different division stages.

Notes: Abstract Sodium salt of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (80% active ingredient), commonly applied for the control of aquatic weeds, was used to observe its effect on the growth and nitrogen fixation of a heterocystous bloom forming blue-green algaAnabaenopsis raciborskii. A concentration of 10Μg per ml of 2,4-D showed stimulation of growth and nitrogen fixation and these were almost unaffected in presence of its 100Μg per ml in the medium. The alga could tolerate up to 800Μg per ml in liquid culture media with and without nitrate nitrogen and up to 90Μg per ml on to agar plates. Nitrogen fixation was inhibited in presence of its higher concentrations.

Notes: Abstract The static initial magnetic susceptibility due to domain wall motion in a polycrystalline magnetic oxide has been explained by Globuset al. [3] using a model of a bulging domain wall inside grains of uniform diameter,D. The present work deals with the dynamic response of this model by solving the equation of motion of such a wall. The resultant solution reproduces Globus' relation for the static case and further shows that the dispersion frequency is ∼D −1 for small grainsizes and ∼D −2 for large grain sizes.

Notes: Abstract Initial permeability and coercive force are structure sensitive properties which depend upon intragranular porosity. It has been found that in a manganese zinc ferrite the initial permeability varies directly as the separation between intragranular pores and the coercive force varies inversely as the square root of this distance. Assuming reversible motion of the domain wall pinned at the pores, the behaviour of initial permeability with respect to the distance between the pores can be adequately explained. It is not possible to give an explanation for the observed relationship between coercive force and the distance between the pores.

Notes: Abstract The oxidation kinetics of CuFeO2 have been studied between 500 and 1000° C under various oxygen partial pressures using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The oxidation rate was found to increase as the oxygen partial pressure was increased, and for a given partial pressure of oxygen it was found to be maximum at ∼700° C. The enthalpy and activation energy for the oxidation of CuFeO2 were calculated to be ∼26.6±2 and ∼18±2 kcal mol−1 respectively. The oxidation of CuFeO2 resulted in the formation of CuFe2O4 and CuO, and the rate of reaction followed an S-type curve as found in the pearlitic transformation in steels.
