    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé On décrit une nouvelle technique pour étudier la formation de mousse dans les polymères fondus qui contiennent des agents de soufflage décomposables par voie thermique. On a associé un simple cylindre et un porte-échantillon d'immersion à un analyseur thermomécanique standard. Cela permet d'enregistrer la hauteur, c'est-à-dire le volume, en fonction du temps ou de la température, à des vitesses de montée en température présélectionnées. Des démonstrations avec du polyéthylène et du chlorure de polyvinyle plastifié pouvant mousser ont mis en évidence les influences respectives de la vitesse de chauffage, du type et de la concentration de l'agent de soufflage, de l'inhibiteur de l'agent de soufflage, de la viscosité du polymère et de l'agent de réticulation sur la vitesse de formation de la mousse et sur sa hauteur finale, c'est-à-dire la densité de la mousse.
    Abstract: Zusammenfassung Eine neue Technik zur Untersuchung der Schaumbildung aus Polymerschmelzen, welche thermisch zerstörbare Schaumbildner enthalten, wird beschrieben. Ein einfacher Zylinder und ein Tauchprobenbehälter wurden mit einem thermomechanischen Standardanalysator gekoppelt. Dies ermöglicht das Registrieren der Höhe, d.h. des Volumens als Funktion der Zeit oder Temperatur, bei vorgewählten Geschwindigkeiten für die Temperaturabtastung. Versuche mit schäumungsfähigem Polyäthylen und plastizisiertem Poly(Vinylchlorid) zeigten die Einflüsse der Aufheizgeschwindigkeit, des Typs und der Konzentration des Schaumbildners, des Inhibitors des Schaumbildners, der Viskosität von Polymer und Quervernetzer auf die Geschwindigkeit der Schaumbildung und auf die Endhöhe des Schaumes, d.h. die Schaumdichte.
    Notes: Abstract A novel technique is described for studying the growth of foam from polymer melts containing thermally-decomposable blowing agents. A simple cylinder and plunger sample holder has been combined with a standard thermomechanical analyzer. This enables the recording of height i.e. volume vs. time or temperature at preselected rates for temperature scan. Demonstrations with foamable polyethylene and plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) have revealed the influences of heating rate, blowing agent type and concentration, blowing agent inhibitor, polymer viscosity and crosslinking agent on foam growth rate and final foam height i.e. foam density.

    Notes: Two component interpenetrating polymer networks (IPN) of the SIN type (simultaneous interpenetrating networks), composed of a polystyrene network (crosslinked with divinyl benzene) and a polyester-polyurethane network (crosslinked with trimethylolpropane), were made. Electron microscopy and glass-transition measurements showed that phase separation had resulted with some interpenetration, presumably occurring at the boundaries. At a composition of about 75 percent polyurethane, a phase inversion occurred, the continuous phase being polystyrene at polyurethane compositions of less than 75 percent. The stress-strain properties and hardness measurements agreed with these results. Enhanced tensile strength was observed in the IPN's in a concentration range where modulus reinforcement was not evident. A small enhancement in tear strength and thermal stability was also noted.

    Notes: We have measured the advancing contact angles of drops of methanol-ethylene glycol mixtures on films of previously studied polyurethane-epoxy interpenetrating polymer networks. The extrapolated critical surface tensions were in excellent agreement with those obtained from advancing contact angles of drops of water-methanol mixtures. A sharp minimum is observed in the critical surface tension at network compositions where we have previously found maxima in ultimate mechanical properties. We advance a physical explanation based on unrelieved surface strains. We have also measured the toluene vapor transmission (permeability, diffusion and sorption coefficients) in these films. These results, together with the previously obtained water vapor permeabilities, are in complete accord with the expected morphologies of these networks.

    Notes: Two component topologically interpenetrating polymer networks of the SIN type (simultaneous interpenetrating networks) composed of a melamine-cured polyacrylate and three different polyether-based polyurethanes were prepared. The linear polymers and prepolymers were combined in solution, together with the necessary crosslinking agents and catalysts, films were cast and subsequently chain extended and crosslinked in situ. In all cases, maxima in tensile strength significantly higher than the tensile strengths of the component networks occurred at 50% polyurethane : 50% polyacrylate. This was explained by an increase in crosslink density resulting from interpenetration. One of the interpenetrating polymer networks showed only one glass transition temperature (Tg) (measured calorimetrically) intermediate in temperature to the Tg's of the components and as sharp as the component Tg's. This is indicative of phase mixing and indicates at least partial chain entanglement (interpenetration). Some enhancement of other physical properties was also noted.

    Notes: The engineering properties of polyurethane-poly(methyl methacrylate) simultaneous interpenetrating networks (SIN's) were evaluated. The hardness behavior reflected the observed phase inversion in the electron-microscopic studies. The maximum ultimate tensile strength was observed at 85% polyurethane-15% poly(methyl methacrylate) IPN and was due to the filler-reinforcing effect of the rigid poly(methyl methacrylate) phase. The ultimate tensile strenght of the 75/25 polyurethane-poly(methyl methacrylate) IPN was higher than that of the corresponding pseudo-IPN's (only one network crosslinked) and the linear blend. The leathery and glassy compositions did not show any reinforcement in the ultimate tensile strength. This indicated that the reinforcement in the ultimate tensile strength was not directly related to interpenetration (by increased physical entanglement crosslinks), but indirectly related by reducing the rigid phase domain sizes and increasing the adhesion between the two phases, thus enhancing the filler-reinforcing effect similar to that observed in a carbon black-filled rubber. The tear strengths of the polyurethane-rich IPN's pseudo-IPN's, and linear blends were found to be higher than that of the pure polyurethane as a combined result of increased modulus and tensile strength. The weight retentions in the thermal decomposition of the IPN's, pseudo-IPN's, and linear blends were higher than the proportional average of the component networks. The results seemed to indicate that this enhancement was related to the presence of the unzipped methyl methacrylate monomer. It was suggested that the monomers acted as radical scavengers in the polyurethane degradation, thus delaying the further reaction of the polyurethane radicals into volatile amines, isocyanates, alcohols, olefins, and carbon dioxide.
