Description / Table of Contents: Summary Recurrence of an IC—PC aneurysm after a successful neck clipping (Heifetz' clip) is reported. This was caused by breaking of a clip blade at its proximal end. It is suggested that some structural weakness was present in the clip metal.

Notes: Summary After intranasal inoculation of suckling rats mouse hepatitis virus multiplied mostly in the nasal epithelium; though there were no symptoms, antibodies were produced. Antibodies were also demonstrated in adult rats. These findings suggest that the rat may be a natural host for the virus.

Notes: Summary Four-week-old weanling mice survived, whereas 1-week-old suckling mice died, after intraperitoneal inoculation of mouse hepatitis virus, MHV-S strain. The factors involved in this difference in susceptibility were studied. After virus inoculation, differences in virus growth in the liver and spleen were observed, which correlated with the susceptibility of animals to the virus. Interferon, detected at an early stage of infection, was considerably lower in suckling mice than in weanling mice. Titers of MHV-S in peritoneal cells from infected animals were at least 100 times greater in suckling than in weanling mice, and a similar, but less prominent difference in virus growth was also found in the corresponding cultured macrophages. After transfer of peritoneal cells from weanling to suckling mice, a decrease in mortality of infected suckling mice was observed. These results suggest that both interferon and macrophages may be important in the age-dependent resistance of mice to MHV-S infection.

Notes: Summary The normal course and appearance of the veins draining the tectum mesencephali proper are described in detail on the basis of the anatomical radiological study. These specific veins, the quadrigeminal veins, were constantly present on autopsy study. There are two types of variations of these quadrigeminal veins. They have a close anatomical and angiographic correlation with the quadrigeminal plate proper, and also outline the posterior aspects of the quadrigeminal plate. The whole structure of the mesencephalon may be delineated by these veins in combination with the other veins of the mesencephalon. They may be of diagnostic value in the early recognition of the brain stem lesions.

Notes: Summary Delayed enhanced CT was performed in 53 cases and these findings are compared with those of delayed radioisotope scan and with operative and histopathologic findings. We have classified the results of enhancement into four types as follows: (1) immediate enhancement pattern due to rich vascular bed, typical in meningiomas; (2) delayed enhancement pattern due to exudation, often seen in cystic astrocytomas; (3) intermediate sustained pattern due to both mechanisms in glioblastoma multiforme; (4) no enhancement pattern as in diffuse astrocytomas. The results of delayed enhanced CT correlated well with those of radioisotope scan.

Notes: Summary Metrizamide CT cisternography (CTC) was performed for the evaluation of CSF dynamics and the diagnosis of skull-base tumors. Results of CTC in 52 cases examined for the study of CSF dynamics correlated well with those of isotope cisternography. However, the degree and duration of ventricular stasis of metrizamide and its transition into a periventricular low-density area in hydrocephalus were recognized more accurately in CTC. Twenty out of 23 cases with suspected skull-base tumor were diagnosed as positive and confirmed by operation. CTC was especially useful in parasellar, CP angle, and other posterior fossa tumors.

Notes: Abstract A guideline for the optimum design of linear wall-ablation lamps is presented with a simple empirical formula which describes the luminescent characteristics of lamps. The absolute luminescent efficiency of the wall-ablation lamp was measured. A high-energy dye laser with a quadruple-elliptical cylindrical cavity was constructed using these lamps, and an output energy of 23.3 J (11.6 MW) was obtained with an overall efficiency of 0.31 %. The energy-flow diagram of this laser system was computed with a rate-equation analysis, and the conversion efficiency from electrical input to laser output was determined. One can expect an overall efficiency of about 2 %.

Notes: Summary This study was undertaken to examine the relationship between electrographic ST-elevation and regional myocardial blood flow during graded coronary constriction. Electrograms from the epicardial surface, outer and inner layers of the myocardium were recorded. Regional blood flow to the outer and inner layers of the myocardium was measured by means of a heat-clearance method. With the application of a coronary constriction, myocardial blood flow to the inner layer began to decrease with a 75% coronary constriction, while flow to the outer layer was maintained at near normal up to least an 80% coronary constriction. Non-linear squares curve of between ST-elevation and the decrease in myocardial flow resulted in y=18.80 e xp −0.06x −0.02 in the outer layer and, y=9.22 e xp −0.02x −1.54 in the inner layer. Also the non-linear squares curve of between epicardial St-elevation and the decrease in myocardial flow resulted in y=50.91 e xp −0.11x +0.04 in the inner layer and y=10.29 e xp −0.07 x +0.03 in the outer layer. The standard deviations of the coefficients of the latter two equations were higher than those of the former two equations. The higher values indicated larger variations of the parameter coefficients and data points. These results clearly demonstrated that a regional intramyocardial electrogram more closely reflects local ischemia than does an epicardial electrogram.
