Abstract Atmospheric electrical potential (E) was evaluated statistically with smoke and sulfur dioxide as a predictor of excess mortality during the London air pollution episodes of the 1950s. E, as a surrogate of respirable aerosols, in combination with SO2 proved to be a better predictor of excess episode mortality than smoke.
