Notes: Several processing methods were examined for their effectiveness in removing 90Sr and 137Cs from vegetables exposed to the radionuclides through the nutrient solution. The greatest decontamination resulted from a combination of pickling and canning which reduced 137Cs by 94% and 90Sr by 65%. Canning was highly effective in reducing radionuclide concentrations in beans and kale. Freezing significantly reduced radionuclide content of only 137Cs in kale. Blanching of sweet potatoes appeared to result in a transfer of radioactivity from the peel to core, indicating that skins of contaminated potatoes should be removed prior to thermal treatment. Preparatory procedures prior to processing did not significantly reduce radionuclide levels except for 137Cs in beans.

Notes: Cereal grains are the major source of both protein and calories in the world. In this regard bulgur is an ancient wheat food of Near Eastern origin. USDA engineers in the Agricultural Research Service have developed it as part of a national effort to increase the use of wheat domestically and in foreign lands under the Foods for Peace Program.Reportedly, bulgur cereal keeps well, but there are few systemized storage studies available which relate sensory testing with storage life to this product The aim of this study, sponsored by the Defense Civil Preparedness Agency, was to perform this task using as products a 100% bulgur wheat cereal and an 85% bulgur/15% soy grits, defatted, toasted blend. These were air and nitrogen packaged in 401 × 411 cans, stored for 0, 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 18 and 24 months at 38° C, withdrawn, and evaluated at these designated times. Studies indicate that these products are very stable, even when stored in air packs. In a presoaked, uncooked bulgur cereal served at 21° C sweetening with a minimum of 6% sugar raised its acceptance significantly to a more desirable level, nearly comparable to its cooked counterpart. Other product data are discussed including a low cost presweetened bulgur wheat product formulation.

Notes: The use of videocartridges as self-instructional material in libraries has increased considerably during recent years. An analysis of the costs of such provisions is outlined. The costs relate to a particular university, but it is suggested that the range of costs should cover most similar institutions. Full details of the assumptions and the basis of the cost analysis are included based on methods used by other workers but incorporating additional elements. A considerable investment in materials and staff is involved in a service such as this. Is it worth investing in these materials?

Notes: The results from a survey of the support staff in 17 universities in the United Kingdom are described. The universities covered a wide range of size, date of foundation and origin. From the data some simple generalizations are deduced. The paucity of support staff in many universities is abundantly clear.

Notes: The use of videocartridges as self-instructional material in libraries has increased considerably during recent years. In this investigation information was collected to answer the following questions. (1) Who uses the material and when? (2) How are the materials used? (3) How do the materials relate to the student's course and assessment? (4) What is the main purpose of the materials? The methods used included observation, questionnaires, free response, individual and group interviews. The responses are reported along with suggestions for improving the system in use. Over 90 students contributed to the investigation.

Notes: C sporogenes PA 3679 and various acids including ReaLemon (a reconstituted lemon juice), cream of tartar, and citric acid were added to high pH tomatoes (pH 〉 4.6) prior to canning. Quart tomato jars were processed for 20 min to determine the effectiveness of different acids on inhibiting the growth of PA 3679 and for 45 min to determine the safety of using the procedures recommended in USDA Home and Garden Bulletin No. 8. ReaLemon prevented and acids inhibited the growth of PA 3679 in the 20-min heat treatment. Since the recommended procedures in Home and Garden Bulletin No. 8 for home-canning raw pack tomatoes in quart jars were modified, this study did not prove or disprove the safety of using the USDA recommendations for home-canning tomatoes.

Notes: Abstract A method of calculating the degree of anteversion of the acetabular fossa is described. A posterior-anterior projection of the prone pelvis with a long focus film and focus object distance is used. The distance between the anterior and posterior rims of the fossa as projected on the films is measured and then divided by a distance equivalent to the diameter: this yields thesin of the anteversion angle. The angle is rapidly calculated with a pocket calculator.

Notes: Summary Ultrastructural aspects of the breakdown of starch grains during the mobilisation of reserves in Phaseolus aureus Roxb. seed germination are described. The starch grains show erosion from within leading to the formation of a hollow shell. The erosion is accompanied by intrusion of cytoplasm into the shell. No evidence of a vesicular transport system to or from the eroding face was found.

Notes: Abstract One of the main problems in designing criterion-referenced items is to ensure adequate sampling of the course content. Criterion-reference test are idiosyncratic to the course being tested. The items in such tests need to be drawn from the domains of learning that take place in the course. A difficulty arises in validating any method of showing the domains of learning in relation to the tests used. The investigation reported in this paper used a method of mapping the course. This mapping method presents the course in a compact visual form. Criterion-referenced test items were drawn up using a less sophisticated method. The parts of the course which would predict good learning from the mapping were checked against the performance on items and vice versa.
