Notes: The feasibility of using Čerenkov radiation to estimate 24Na in the study of ion exchange in cell suspension cultures of Acerpseudoplatanus has been investigated. Some practical procedures for preparing samples and counting have been proposed according to the particular need of the experiment and the desired degree of counting efficiency.

Notes: Abstract The radiographic features of pericarditis due to Histoplasma capsulatum are described in 5 children. This diagnosis is suggested when enlargement of the cardiac silhouette is associated with pneumonia, parenchymal nodules or adenopathy. These findings are particularly significant if the patient lives or has lived in an area which is endemic for histoplasmosis. While pleural effusion is rare in primary histoplasmosis, it is frequently present in patients with histoplasma pericarditis.

Notes: Abstract A case of congestive heart failure in a child with Wilms' tumor treated with Adriamycin is presented and discussed. The role of Adriamycin in the production of cardiotoxicity is reviewed.

Notes: Summary The influence of ambient temperature and water supply on water metabolism and O2-consumption was measured in rock hyraxes (Procavia habessinica). With ad libitum food and water (control), water turnover rates of hyraxes were significantly lower than the general eutherian mean; water turnover rates were 61.4, 44.1 and 55.1 ml·kg−0.82·24 h−1 at 20, 27 and 35°C respectively. When greens were fed ad libitum but no drinking water was given, water turnover rate at 20°C was twofold higher, but at 27 and 35°C it was similar to that in control experiments. Water turnover rates were significantly reduced when no drinking water and only 25 g greens per day were offered (25.8, 22.0 and 29.3 ml·kg−0.82·24 h−1 at 20, 27 and 35°C respectively). Highest urine osmolality (3,200 mosm·kg−1) was recorded at 20°C. Oxygen consumption under control conditions was 43% below that predicted on the basis of body weight for most eutherian mammals. The thermoneutral zone ranged from 27 to 35°C, and the basal metabolic rate was 165 kJ·kg−0.75·h−1.

Notes: The use of fiber-reinforced composites in structures is discussed with emphasis on the need for a method to obtain long time properties from short time tests. Results of vibration, constant strain-rate and creep tests are presented for boron epoxy laminates. The data is statistically conditioned and a time-temperature shifting procedure is used to obtain master curves for response at an individual temperature. Three analytical linear viscoelastic characterization techniques are used to obtain long term creep response from dynamic data. Comparisons between analytical predictions are given for vibration and constant strain-rate data. Creep predictions are also compared to experimental observations.
