Notes: Abstract The electromagnetic fields of an electric dipole located inside a cylindrical cavity or empty tunnel are formulated. The results are used to deduce an expression for the change of self-impedance due to the presence of the cavity or tunnel walls. A numerical evaluation of the resultant convergent integral and a summation of the angular harmonic series were performed. An important finding is that the input resistance of the dipole is approximately a constant for frequencies less than about 25 MHz for a typical tunnel radius of 2 m. Such results are shown to be in qualitative agreement with an earlier analysis of an electric dipole over a dissipative half-space.

Notes: Our first need is to define closely the sort of people for whom we intend the translation. Then we must be clear as to what we aim to achieve with them and it. Our audience, presumably, consists of young people many of whom have a primary allegiance to some other Arts discipline, chiefly English, Modern Languages, or History. Almost all will have some experience of studying literature in their own tongue, some will be familiar at first hand with foreign literatures, few will have more than a nodding acquaintance with Latin. By and large they will be used to taking a text and pressing it so as to establish a close understanding of it. Unhappily, if they attempt that with any translation known to me disaster will inevitably ensue. At this point, many readers will no doubt feel that all their doubts about the wisdom of attempting to teach Virgil through translation are being vindicated, while, in my experience, those who wish to defend the practice will tend to do so by granting the proposition that much will inevitably be lost in translation, conceding that students must learn not to press translations, and then making a number of ill-defined generalizations on what can be achieved. What I wish to argue is that none of the popular Virgilian translations was composed with our needs in mind, all make certain assumptions which were possibly quite proper for their audiences but which render their work unsuitable for ours. I shall argue further that we are far too lenient in the demands we make of our translators.

Notes: Summary N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU), N-(2-chloroethyl)-N′-(trans-4-methylcyclohexyl)-N-nitrosourea (methylCCNU), and N,N′-bis(2-chloroethyl)-N-nitrosourea (BCNU) were examined for their effect on glutathione (GSH) levels of various tissues of normal and L1210-leukemic mice. BCNU produced significant decreases in the GSH levels of livers of both groups, but caused no change in the GSH content of the L1210 tumor or in the lungs. The GSH content of the kidneys of L1210 tumor-bearing mice, however, was significantly decreased by BCNU at early time points. A small increase in the liver content of oxidized glutathione could not account for the decreased content of GSH. Methyl CCNU and MNU were without effect on any of the tissues examined. These data are consistent with our previous observation that BCNU is a substrate for GSH S-transferase, and suggest that a GSH-dependent process is an important pathway for the metabolism of BCNU.

Notes: Abstract The correlations between the haemodynamic and transthoracic electrical impedance changes resulting from a progressive reduction in the circulating blood volume were studied in four intact mongrel dogs artificially ventilated with a mixture of halothane in nitrous oxide-oxygen. The cardiac output of the dogs was measured by both the electrical impedance and the fibre optic dye dilution techniques. It was found that significant correlations existed between the blood loss and the arterial blood pressure, the maximum first derivative of the transthoracic impedance, the Heather Index, the transthoracic impedance, the maximum rate of change of aortic pressure and the cardiac stroke work. There was also a good correlation between the dye and impedance cardiac output values, the impedance value always being higher than the corresponding dye value. The correlation between the Heather Index and the PEP/LVET ratio and 1 /PEP2 varied markedly from dog to dog.

Notes: Abstract Anatomical studies of the skin of mature White Fulani, N'Dama, Muturu and the Friesian cattle showed that there are significant regional and breeds differences in hair follicle density and depth. The hair follicle distribution per cm2 of skin was higher on the neck, ventral and the upper limb sites (2000 – 2496) than on the dorsal, midside and eye margins (1344 – 1920). Low densities were recorded on the horn margin, perineum and the lower limb sites (576 – 960). This regional distribution was consistent in all breeds except the White Fulani in which follicle densities were significantly lower for most body sites. Hair follicle depth was greater in the Friesians (1.63 ± 0.68 mm) than in the N'Dama (0.98 ± 0.13 mm), the White Fulani (0.91 ± 0.31 mm) and the Muturu (0.84 ± 0.25 mm) cattle. Among body sites, follicle depth was significantly greater on the horn margin, lower and upper limbs and the scrotum (1.16 – 1.48 mm) than on other body sites (0.86 – 0.98 mm). A significant negative correlation was found between hair follicle density and follicle depth.

Notes: [Auszug] It is now known that GH will stimulate both liver5 and kidney6 to produce the somatomedins and that in man the liver is a major site of somatomedin production7. If bovine growth hormone (BGH) in a chemically defined medium is perfused through rat liver, somatomedin activity is subsequently found in ...
