Notes: Summary In a case of cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX), confirmed biochemically and histologically, quantitative histological studies of the biopsied sural nerve revealed significantly higher incidence of de- and remyelination and onion bulb than in controls. The density of total myelinated fibers fell within the range of controls, although the density of large myelinated fibers seemed to be slightly decreased. It was suggested that the preferential involvement of the myelin sheath and Schwann cell may exist in CTX.

Notes: Summary The fiber projection from the lateral reticular nucleus (LRN) to the cerebellum was examined in the cat. Electrolytic lesions were placed in a confined area of the LRN using a parapharyngeal approach, and the ensuing degeneration was studied in sections stained by the Nauta and the Fink-Heimer methods. Fibers from the LRN ascend the ipsilateral restiform body, terminating bilaterally but chiefly in the ipsilateral cerebellum. In the ipsilateral cortex projections were found to lobules I to V, with denser terminations in sublobules IVb to Ve. The projections are stronger in the intermediate-lateral zones than in the vermis proper. There is also a dense projection to sublobules VId and VIf and to the medialmost part of the simple lobule (HVI). Scanty termination was seen in the medialmost part of crus I. There is a moderate projection to the caudalmost folium of sublobule VIIb and to the rostral folia of sublobule VIIIa and the paramedian lobule. The contralateral projection by fibers crossed within the cerebellum is far less dense but clearcut in the anterior lobe, the rostral folia of lobule VI and the medial part of the simple lobule. In the ipsilateral nuclei strong projections were found to rostral portions of the medial nucleus (M) and the caudal two thirds of the anterior interpositus nucleus (IA) with predominance in the lateral part of the latter. A focal projection was found to rostrodorsal portions of the posterior interpositus nucleus (IP). No projection was found to the lateral nucleus (L). Contralaterally there is a weak projection to the rostral part of M and the medial parts of IA and IP.

Notes: Summary Two series of lead-containing human blood samples, one series of 53 samples of blood impregnated with lead nitrate at various concentrations up to 100 µg/dl, and the other series of 50 samples obtained from lead-exposed workers and containing lead up to 70 µg/dl, were analyzed by the following three methods of different analytical principles; 1) the flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry after wet digestion, 2) the direct chelation-extraction (avoiding wet digestion; Hessel, 1968) followed by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry, and 3) the flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results were compared mutually and also with those from 4) the automated analysis (Ikeda et al., 1977).It was proved that good agreements in measured values exist between any pair of the analytical methods out of the four, the correlation coefficients being higher than 0.8. The results by the second method agreed best with those by the first method (standard but time- and hand-consuming) with slope of the regression line next to 1 and a very small intercept. The advantages of the methods studied were compared.

Notes: Summary GLC systems are developed for quantitative urinalysis of leucodermogenic phenols and catechols, i. e., p-tert.-butylphenol, p-tert. Amyphenol, p-octylphenol, p- and o-phenylphenol, 3- and 4-methylcatechol, 3-isopropylcatechol, and 4-tert.-butylcatechol. The systems were successfully applied for the exposure assessment of the workers in factories producing p-tert.-butylphenol, p-octylphenol and/or 4-tert.-butylcatechol. In accordance with estimated exposure intensities, the concentrations in the urine of product packers were higher than those of plant operators and engineers. The levels were reduced by the improvement of hygienic conditions in the workshops. Importance of biological monitoring is discussed in relation with the possible skin penetration. From the data obtained, BP concentration in urine, 2 μg/ml, is tentatively proposed as a urinary biological threshold limit value to prevent leucodermogenic effect.

Notes: Summary Oxygen permeability of the chorion of the silkworm,Bombyx mori, was measured in relation to embryonic diapause. It did not change appreciably when the eggs were freed from diapause by being kept under long chilling. This finding suggests that the increase in oxygen permeability of the chorion is not a pre-requisite for the termination of the diapause and resynthesis of glycogen from 2 polyols.

Notes: Abstract The energy spectrum of diffuse hard X-rays measured in the range 10–40 keV shows a rather sharp change of slope. The logarithmic derivative of the spectrum changes around 20–30 keV by the increment significantly greater than 0.5 within an interval smaller than 50 keV.
