Notes: Summary 5-Thiolhistidine reacted with dopaquinone produced in vitro by tyrosinase oxidation of dopa to give high yields of secoadenochromines (3) along with a small amount of adenochromines (1) which are the amino-acids responsible for the iron-(III)-binding properties of adenochromes.

Notes: Summary In the dog ileum, neurotensin cells stained with immunofluorescence or immunoperoxidase proved distinct from argentaffin (EC) cells, glucagon immunoreactive (GLI) cells and pancreatic peptide immunoreactive (PP) cells. Neurotensin cells showed various degrees of reactivity with Grimelius'silver. With electron microscopy, besides EC cells, large granule cells with a thin peripheral rim of Grimelius-reactivity (L cells) and large granule cells with variable Grimelius-reactivity of the core (N cells) were found. On distributive grounds, L cells were identified with GLI cells and N cells were interpreted as neurotensin cells.

Notes: Summary A convenient one-step procedure, based upon the tyrosinase co-oxidation of dopa and cysteine, is reported for the synthesis of 5-S-cysteinyldopa (I) in 74% yield. Secondary products of the reaction turned out to be 2-S-cysteinyldopa (II, 14%), 2,5-S, S-dicysteinyldopa (IV, 5%), and the hitherto unknown 6-S-cysteinyldopa (III, ∼1%).

Notes: Abstract The glasses with various compositions in the LiTaO3-SiO2-Al2O3 system were heated from room temperature to temperatures ranging from 750° to 1050° C at a rate of 5° C min−1. From the glasses in the LiTaO3-SiO2 system no transparent glass-ceramic was obtained even when their LiTaO3/SiO2 mole ratios were as high as 2.33. The diameter and number of the LiTaO3 crystal grains precipitated in the glasses were 5–15 μm and 108–1010 grains cm−3, respectively. On the contrary, transparent glass-ceramics were obtained from the glasses containing Al2O3; their compositions covered a fairly large area in the LiTaO3-SiO2 -Al2O3 system, which encompasses the compositions with the LiTaO3/SiO2+AlO1.5 mole ratio as low as 0.25. The diameter and number of the LiTaO3 crystal grains precipitated in the transparent glass-ceramics were as small as 10–20 nm and as many as 1016–1018 grains cm−3, respectively. High nucleation rates of the LiTaO3 crystals in the Al2O3-containing glasses were interpreted in terms of structural inflexibility induced in the glass-network by the addition of Al2O3 to the LiTaO3-SiO2 system.

Notes: A reliable and uniform vascular perfusion fixation method for the testis has been developed by using an initial washout solution containing a vasodilator and an anticoagulant. This is followed by a brief fixation with a sodium phosphate buffered formaldehyde-glutaraldehyde solution of conventional strength, and then a second more concentrated aldehyde fixative solution containing picric acid. The method takes into account some of the unique features of the vascular supply of the male genital tract for its favorable perfusion and fixation. The advantages of this method are: (1) consistently favorable preservation of the testis; (2) simple and inexpensive apparatus; and (3) stable and relatively innocuous stock solutions.

Notes: Summary A technique has been developed to obtain viable, isolated and enriched populations of gastrin cells (G-cells) from the rat stomach. Restricted tissue samples from a small area of the pyloric antrum known to be particularly rich in G-cells, were sequentially digested with pronase followed by mechanical agitation, to remove the epithelial cells. This technique resulted in a significant enrichment of G-cells (3–4 fold) since the surface epithelial cells and upper portions of the glands were discarded before the initial G-cell fraction was collected. These cells in suspension were then isolated from each other by gentle pipetting in a DNase containing solution and designated the crude preparation (CP). The G-cells were then purified further by separating the cells according to size by velocity sedimentation. The greatest concentration of G-cells (15–25 %) was found in the fraction containing cells with diameters of 10 to 12 μm. The effectiveness of the technique was evaluated by counting G-cells as identified by electron microscopy and immunofluorescence and assessing gastrin activity by radioimmunoassay. All three methods indicated that cell separation by gravity velocity sedimentation enriched the G-cell population 15–20 fold over their concentration in the CP. The combined techniques of selective pronase digestion followed by gravity velocity sedimentation resulted in an isolated cell preparation containing a 50–100 fold increase of G-cells over their normal distribution in the intact gastric mucosa. Since these isolated G-cells retain features indicating viability, their usefulness for in vitro studies is suggested.

Notes: Single crystals of ZnO were grown at 1 050-1200°C by the oxidation of zine vapor which was continuously evolved at constant rate of 7.2 × 10-5 mol/min. Favourable flow rate of oxygen was 4.3-6.6 × 10-5 mol/min and was 1.2-1.8 times than theoretical value to oxidize zine vapor. The crystals grew larger with raising up growing temperature. Large crystals having maximum size of 2-4 mm ini diameter and 22 mm long were grown at 1200°C for 55 hours. The crystals were light gray and transparent. Representative forms of the crystals were both platelet with developed (100) face and hexagonal prism-type.
