Notes: We have studied 109 endocrine cell tumours of the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas and bronchus in terms of histological pattern and histochemical staining with immunocytochemical studies on seven tumours. As a result we believe that previous histological classifications need modification. 5-Hydroxytryptamine secreting tumours have a carcinoid (A1) pattern with in some cases, an additional tubuloacinar element (A1A2) and definable histochemical reactions; well differentiated gastrinomas, insulinomas and glucagonomas are associated commonly, but not exclusively, with particular histological patterns and argyrophilia, but no such association exists for less differentiated tumours, This may be related to the synthesis of precursor hormones by less differentiated tumours. Mixed patterns are common, partcularly in tumours of foregut derivation. Prospective studies planned to correlate histology, histochemistry, immunocytochemistry, and ultrastructure are needed on all endocrine cell tumours.

Notes: Summary The results of a community survey showed that non-married women, but not married women, had a lower rate of minor psychiatric morbidity if they were employed. It was argued that employment may protect women who lack social support in other areas. The failure to find the same results in a general practice survey suggested that women at high risk for minor psychiatric morbidity were least likely to consult a general practitioner.

Notes: Abstract Sodium dodecylsulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis reveals that zein prepared from normal maize inbred (Zea mays L.) contains six separable components. Z1 and Z2 are the predominant species, with molecular weights of 21,800 and 19,000 daltons. Amino acid analysis of these two components shows that both are rich in glutamic acid, leucine, and proline, but low in lysine. Of the four minor bands, Z3, Z4, Z5, and Z6, the latter two exist only in trace amounts. A mutation at the opaque-2 locus severely suppresses the synthesis of Z1. The nonallelic mutant, opaque-7, strongly suppresses the synthesis of Z3 and Z4, while slightly reducing Z2. On the other hand, the floury-2 mutant appears to reduce the synthesis of these six proteins in the same relative proportion. In the double mutant combinations, opaque-2 apparently is epistatic to opaque-7 and floury-2 in the synthesis of zein components. The glutelin fraction shows a more complex banding pattern; however, qualitative differences are not apparent among the mutant lines examined.

Notes: Summary Plants ofSolanum brevidens graft-inoculated with potato leaf roll virus (PLRV) grew vigorously and had a normal healthy appearance. Although presence of the virus was confirmed in all inoculated plants by graft tests to potato and/orDatura stramonium, recovery of PLRV fromS. brevidens PI 218228 usingPhysalis floridana and the aphidMyzus persicae was erratic and only few test seedlings became infected. Ease of recovery of the virus using aphids was not influenced by presence of a continuous graft union with infected potato. Testing ofS. brevidens PI 245763 withM. persicae was not possible due to poor aphid survival on plants of this accession.

Notes: Summary The symptomatology of Andean potato latent virus (APLV) was studied in several wild potato species and potato cultivars using isolates Caj, Hu and Ay from Peru. In greenhouse tests, the virus was latent in most isolate/cultivar combinations with primary infection but secondary infection commonly caused symptoms. Wild species infected with the different isolates normally reacted with symptoms with either type of infection. The main symptoms were mosaics, chlorotic netting of minor leaf veins and, with wild species, leaf deformation; the netting symptom was typical only with Caj. In infected cultivars growing in the field, an additional symptom, rugosity, sometimes also developed and environmental conditions at high altitude seemed to enhance symptom formation. Very severe symptoms were found in a cultivar jointly infected with APLV and Andean potato mottle virus. Transmission of APLV from an infected plant to its tubers was erratic.

Notes: Abstract The sex pheromone of the San Jose scale,Quadraspidiotus perniciosus (Comstock), was isolated from airborne collections on Porapak Q. Two components, present in approximately equal amounts, were identified as (Z)-3,7-dimethyl-2,7-octadien-1-yl propanoate and 3-methylene-7-methyl-7-octen-1-yl propanoate. Greenhouse bioassays and field tests have shown that the compounds are independently attractive to male San Jose scale. These structures are compared with those of other known scale pheromones.
