Notes: Abstract Analysis of level energies in aligned octupole bands in even-even deformed nuclei using the VMI-model expressed in terms of the rotational angular momentumR, show that almost complete alignment is reached at low spin values. It is shown that the alignment is almost spin independant. Using the ground-state band VMI-parameters only a renormalization of the alignment parameter 〈J ⊥〉 is enough to reproduce the level energies of the NPB's.

Notes: Abstract Superbands, responsible for the backbending in156Dy and other N=90 and N=88 nuclei, are proposed to be alignedn(i13/2)2 bands, whereas it is argued that the recently discovered positive parity band in156Dy withI π= (2+) up to 10+ members does not constitute the low spin extension of the superband.

Notes: Abstract The decay of 20 min179Re has been studied by means of Ge(Li) and Si(Li) detectors and a magneticβ-ray spectrometer. From the measured positon endpoint aQ-value of 2690±50 keV has been deduced. The decay scheme given is supported by coincidence relations. Fast beta transitions (logft≈5.1) to levels at 720keV and 1680 keV in179W can be explained by a three quasi-particle character for these states. Nilsson assignments to these and other levels are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Levels in179W have been deduced from in-beam gamma and conversion electron studies of the181Ta(p, 3n)179W reaction. The gamma-ray spectrum was studied with Ge(Li) detectors and a crystal diffraction spectrometer; the conversion electrons were measured with a broad range transport solenoid Si(Li) spectrometer. The multipolarities of some 50 transitions could be determined. Coriolis mixing of the Nilsson orbits withN=6 was calculated.

Notes: Abstract The spin-parity of the 687.59 keV level in236U populated in the decay of236Np is determined to be 2− in disagreement with recent 1− assignments from reaction data, but in accordance with previous radioactive236Np decay studies. The 687 keV ground state transition is shown to have a pureM2 character. The 642 keV 2−→2+ transition hasE1:M2:E3 mixing ratios of 64∶30∶6. The half-life of the 2− state is 3.78 ± 0.09 ns. The hindrance factor of the E1-part fits an E1 transition withΔK=2, theM2-part has the same transition rate as the M2 transitions in the neighbouring237Np nucleus and the E3-part is enhanced by two orders of magnitude relative to the Weisskopf estimate. The data are compared to analogous transitions in the rare earth region.

Notes: Abstract Level energies of negative parity yrast bands (NPB) have been studied with a recently proposed, sensitive method. The irregular behaviour of the NPB's in theN=88 nuclei around spin 9–11 and the smooth behaviour in156Dy (up toI=13) and in238U (up to I=19) support calculations by Vogel, where NPB's are described as aligned octupole bands up to a critical spin where intersection with two-quasiparticle bands takes place. Considering the NPB levels (I≦13) in156Dy as members of an aligned octupole band, we obtain a remarkably good reproduction of their decay properties and energies using the VMI model.

Notes: Abstract The absorption of stoppedπ − in181Ta and209Bi has been investigated by studying prompt and delayedγ-ray spectra. Absolute cross-sections for the yield of isotopes per capturedπ − in (π −, xn) reactions, as well as the relative probability of populating nuclear states of different spins have been measured for the hafnium and lead isotopes, respectively. A spin as high as 20 has been observed in the production of204Pb. The ground-state rotational bands of the hafnium isotopes are excited to spin values up to 16. Neutron multiplicities as large as 15 have been observed for both targets. A neutron multiplicity of ≃8 is most probable for both tantalum and bismuth targets. The strong interaction monopole energy shiftɛ 0 and widthΓ 0 for the 4f level are found to beε 0(181Ta)=540±100eV; ɛ0(209Bi)=1790±150 eV;Γ 0(181Ta)=225±57 eV;Γ 0(209Bi) =1166±70 eV. The quadrupole moments, determined from the hyperfine splitting of the 4f pionic atom level, areQ=3.30±0.06b andQ=}-0.50±0.08b for181Ta and209Bi, respectively.

Notes: Abstract Levels in174Hf excited in the decay of174Ta have been studied. Measurements of gamma-rays, conversion electrons and gamma-gamma-time coincidences were performed. The ground state band, the beta-vibrational band, the gamma-vibrational band with its head at 1226.81 keV, aK=3+ band at 1303.42 keV and aK=2− octupole band at 1308.67 keV were observed. Several 2+ levels withK=0 are excited. The mainβ +-branches proceed through allowed or first-forbidden transitions to the 2+ and 4+ levels of the ground state band. The character of theI π=3(+) ground state of174Ta is discussed.
