    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird eine experimentelle Untersuchung der Strömungsinstabilitäten bei nichtstationärem Sieden von Freon 11 in einem aufwärts durchströmten System von vier parallelen Kanälen mit und ohne Querverbindungen vorgelegt. Es wurde entweder die Heizleistung plötzlich erhöht bei fester Einstellung der Mengenregelung oder der Massenstrom plötzlich erniedrigt bei fester Heizleistung. Man beobachtete zwei Typen von Schwingungen, nämlich rasche Dichteschwankungen oder periodische Änderungen des Druckabfalls. Der gesamte Druckabfall wurde über dem Massenstrom bei veränderten Heizleistungen und Einstellungen des Mengenreglers aufgetragen. Die stabilen und unstabilen Bereiche der beiden Arten von Schwingungen wurden aufgezeigt, ebenso wie die Grenzen, an denen die Instabilitäten aufrechterhalten wurden. Die Ergebnisse für gleiche und ungleiche Heizleistungen und das Verhalten mit und ohne Querverbindungen wurden diskutiert.
    Notes: Abstract In this study, the transient boiling flow instabilities in a four parallel channel upflow system with and without cross-connections have been experimentally investigated using Freon-11 as the test fluid. Several series of transient experiments have been run using a step increase in power input with a constant flow control valve setting and a step decrease in flow rate with a constant heat input. Two major modes of oscillations, namely density-wave type and pressure-drop type oscillations, have been observed. Total system pressure drop has been plotted as a function of mass flow rate for various heat inputs and flow control valve settings, and the stable and unstable regions for transient density-wave type and pressure-drop type oscillations have been determined and the boundaries of sustained instabilities have also been indicated. Experiments have been conducted with equal and unequal heat inputs and the results have been compared with each other. A comparison of the transient instabilities observed in four parallel channel system with and without cross connections has also been made.

    Notes: Summary Flight performance in locusts is a function of age, with its peak value at 18 days after emergence. While allatectomy retards the normal development of flight capability, it also has the effect of slowing down the decline in flight performance characteristic of operated control locusts as they age. Periodic topical application of synthetic juvenile hormone remedies the initial effect of allatectomy but its effectiveness wears off with age. The period of optimum flight performance is prolonged in locusts allatectomised when mature. A characteristic features of the flight pattern of immature-allatectomised and matureallatectomised locusts when flown about one week after the operation is a rapid decline in flight speed during the first 20 minutes of flight. Eventually, as the allatectomised locusts age, they assume the flight pattern of normal locusts and subsequent differences in flight performance between operated and normal locusts are confined to differences in flight intensity. Allatectomy has no marked effect on the preflight haemolymph total lipid and carbohydrate levels, the mobilisation of lipid and the amount of carbohydrate depleted. The quantity of lipid mobilised is, however, related to flight performance in both allatectomised and operated control locusts. Locusts which fly faster mobilise more lipid. The lipids mobilised by the adipokinetic hormone are 16∶18; 18∶18 and 16∶16 diglycerides in order of abundance. Allatectomy has no effect on the nature of these diglycerides released during flight.

    Notes: Human cell lines derived from a melanoma and a colon carcinoma, and cultures of human melanocytes and intestinal epithelial cells, as well as a mouse mesenchymal non-neoplastic cell line and a malignant subline of the same have been quantitatively studied in tissue culture for their sensitivity to thymidine. All three tumor lines produced solid tumors when injected into nude thymus-deficient mice. No tumors were obtained by injecting cells of the human normal long-term cultures or of the non-neoplastic mouse line.The tumor-producing lines showed a greater sensitivity to the lethal effects of high concentrations of thymidine than their non-tumor-producing counterparts. Less than 23% of the tumor cells survived 72 hours in the presence of 1 mg/ml of thymidine, in contrast to 60% or more of the non-tumor cells.Colony formation was much more inhibited by thymidine and the differential between normal and tumor cells was even more pronounced. Tumor cells which also were treated for 72 hours with 1 mg/ml of thymidine and then plated in fresh medium formed very few colonies. If the plating efficiency of the untreated controls is considered as 100%, 4.3% or less of the treated tumor cells formed colonies, in contrast to 33% or more of the non-tumor cells.
