Notes: Abstract The fatigue phenomenon of mild steel is characterized by the existence of a fatigue limit and coaxing effects. Although many studies have been made on strain ageing due to interstitial solute atoms of carbon and nitrogen, the effect of strain ageing on the fatigue limit is not yet fully understood. The objective of this work is to clarify the effect of strain ageing on the fatigue limit. Experiments were undertaken from the view point that fatigue is a competitive process of two mechanisms of damage and strengthening of the material. Two techniques were applied for this purpose. One was the measurement of the change in solute contents of C and N atoms, and the other the reversion of the Cottrell atmosphere. The experimental results recognized that strain ageing occurred in the fatigue process and that by removing the strain ageing effect, specimens could fail below the fatigue limit. The fatigue limit could be increased above the original value by suppressing dislocation multiplication during fatigue. It was also observed that, as the time for strain ageing increased at higher temperatures, the knee of the S–N curve shifted to smaller number of cycles.

Notes: Summary The mean residence-time of radical molecules solubilized up to saturation in a micelle has been measured in nine systems resulted from the combination of three surfactants (sodium octyl, decyl, and dodecyl sulfates) and three radicals (t-butyl-(1,1-dimethylbutyl)-,-(1,1-dimethylpentyl)-, and-(1,1-dimethylhexyl)-nitroxides). The introduction of one methylene in the alkyl chain of nitroxide radical increased the stay-time by about three times. An increase in the alkyl-chain length of surfactant also increased the residence-time, but the effect was much smaller; the increase of four methylenes doubled the residence-time.

Notes: Abstract Heat transfer characteristics during the vaporization process of a pentane or furan drop in an aqueous glycerol of high viscosity has been studied. With the progress of vaporization, the overall heat transfer coefficient related to the liquid-liquid interfacial area of a two-phase bubble increases monotonically, and influences of initial drop diameter and temperature difference reduce. Some convection or circulation seems to occur in the unvaporized-liquid phase.

Notes: Summary Optimum preventive maintenance policies for a two-unit standby redundant system are reviewed. Under the assumptions that all distributions are arbitrary, the first-passage time distributions, the transition probabilities, and the expected numbers of visits to a certain state are derived. Using the probabilistic quantities above, we discuss the optimum preventive maintenance policies maximizing or minimizing some criteria. We show that under suitable conditions there exist the optimum preventive maintenance policies which are given by the unique solutions of the equations. This paper concludes with numerical examples of such optimum preventive maintenance policies.

Notes: From the analysis of the permeation of 35S labeled ethanesulfonic acid, through nylon-6 films sorption isotherms were obtained. The films are characterized by their largely different content of carboxyl and amino end groups. It was found that the shape of the isotherm depends on the molar ratio of the two end groups: an S-shape curve for the film containing the carboxyl end group larger than the amino end group and a Langmuir-type curve for the film containing comparable numbers of end groups. These results were explained by the McGregor-Harris theory in which the acid dissociation constants of the two end groups in nylon were estimated experimentally.
