Notes: The influence of macrophages on polyclonal B-cell responses to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and on a primary, specific immune response to a hapten-LPS conjugate was studied in mouse spleen and lymph node cells in serum-free and serum-supplemented cultures. Macrophages were found not to be necessary, and B cells were directly activated by LPS. In serum-free cultures of macrophage depleted spleen cells, (a) proliferation and antibody secretion occurred at normal levels or were enhanced when compared with normal spleen cells, (b) the responsiveness of limiting cell numbers to LPS was better than in normal spleen cell cultures, (c) LPS did not increase the number or activate residual macrophages, (d) the primary specific response to a hapten-LPS conjugate developed normally, (e) peripheral lymph node cells, which are known to contain a very low concentration of macrophages, from normal or congenitally athymic (nude) mice mounted excellent proliferative responses to LPS Furthermore, in cultures supplemented with fetal bovine serum, depletion of adherent cells resulted in enhancement of LPS-induced B-cell responses. Addition of peritoneal macrophages to adherent cell-depleted spleen cells produced suppression at all concentrations of both mitogen and adherent cells. Suppressive activity could also be demonstrated in supematants from adherent cell cultures stimulated by LPS

Notes: The primary immune response to sheep erythrocytes in adherent cell-depleted cultures was restored by adding a critical number of peritoneal ceils. Complete substitution was achieved also with supernatants from allogencic and syngeneic peritoneal cells. Both living fibroblasts and supernatants from fibroblast cultures were found to be highly efficient substitutes for adherent cells in both syngeneic and allogeneic systems. Supernatants from non-antigen-treated peritoneal cells and fibroblasts caused increased DNA synthesis and induction of polyclonal antibody synthesis in normal spleen cells. Thus, adherent cells need not function in the immune response by presenting antigen to the B cells via ‘IgT’ or by releasing signal-2 activity, which acts on lymphocytes that have already received signal 1.

Notes: Summary The influence of tonsilleetomy and adenotomy on tube function was examined in 100 children ranging from 2 years to 12 years of age. The measurements were performed by tympanometry during 6 days after the operation. The results were put into relation to the pressure values found before operation. In cases with normal middle ear pressure values these declined on the first day after operation down to values below 150 mm (watergauge) normalizing within the following 5 days. In cases with preoperative fluid in the middle ear the tympanogram would mostly not normalize after adenotomy. The results of these examinations give rise to consequences to the therapeutic procedure. 1. The adenotomy never should be performed together with tympanoplastic surgery. Otherwise the subpressure values after adenotomy may lead to adhesive processes. 2. As middle ear fluid will not be absorbed after adenotomy alone tubes should be inserted into the tympanic membrane.

Notes: Summary Aging does not only affect the sensory-neural region of the hearing organ, but as well the middle ear and its mechanic acoustic function. To determine changes in friction and elasticity of middle ear function due to growing age, impedance audiometric methods were used. Alterations of middle ear impedance correlating with age and sex were proved by tympanometry, compliance measurement, reflex-activity and Eustachian tube function. The audiological results confirm morphological data of the middle ear, and prove that the hearing organ may be looked a, as a sensitive indicator of human physiological aging process.

Notes: Summary Of a large groupe of patients, Seromucotympanon (SMT) of adults was investigated according to sex, anamnesis, medical findings, progress, and therapy. Tympanometric measurements were used for diagnosis and controls. These findings are compared with SMT of children. The ratio of mucous to serous otitis was found to be about: 1∶2 in adults and 3∶:1 in children. Time and application of conservative or surgical therapy are discussed.

Notes: Summary This report is concerned with angiomatic new formations of the cheek containing metaplastic bone. Physical findings were firm, disc-like new formations in the cheek. Clinical and histological findings as well as differential diagnostic aspects are discussed.

Notes: Summary The esophageal speech after laryngectomy is the most common method for vocal rehabilitation. The new function of the esophagus as a voice-producing organ causes morphological changes. A so-called pseudoglottis was described by many authors using radiologic or cineradiographic methods. Studying the pathological anatomy in three cases in which an autopsy was performed, we could demonstrate that a well-differentiated pseudoglottis may develop. Basing on hypertrophic parts of the constrictor muscle there are structures reminding on vocal cords. It is discussed, if the “waist” of the pharyngo-esophageal region resulting from the laryngectomy is a precondition for the development of a well-formed pseudoglottis.
