    Notizen: Abstract The effect of serotonin on the ultrastructure of the white matter in the CNS of dogs was studied. Intracisternal injection of the amine (6 μg in 0.1 ml physiological saline) led to considerable disturbances in the myelin and glia in regions of the white matter of the spinal cord adjacent to the cerebrospinal fluid channels. Loss of the regular structure and separation of the lamellae of the myelin with rupture and lysis of the myelin sheath and demyelination were observed. Vacuolar degeneration was observed in the oligodendrocytes; the astrocytes were virtually unchanged. After local intracerebral injection of the amine (2 μg in 0.01 ml physiological saline) similar disturbances developed in the white matter of the cerebral hemispheres, but with features of an inflammatory reaction in the late stages of the investigation. In control animals which received injections of physiological saline, changes appeared later and only in the gliocytes. It is concluded that serotonin has the property of injuring myelin and glia.

    Notizen: Abstract The course of the primary immunologic response after unilateral destruction of the posterior hypothalamic nuclei is atypical, antibody synthesis is depressed, antibodies can be detected later, and the number of antibody-forming cells is reduced. Electron-microscopic investigations revealed a decrease in the functional activity of the plasma cells, a relative predominance of young undifferentiated cells of the plasma-cell series, and a decrease in the number of mature differentiated forms, evidently reflecting the reduced rate of differentiation of immunocompetent cells.

    Notizen: Abstract The concentration of serotonin (ST), noradrenalin, and adrenalin in the blood, cerebrospinal fluid, and certain brain structures and the monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity were investigated in the course of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis in dogs. In the preparalytic period a tendency was observed for the ST concentration to fall and the catecholamine concentration to rise. The stage of clinical manifestations of encephalomyelitis was accompanied by lowering of the ST level in the white matter of the hemispheres and by generalized inhibition of adrenergic structures. No significant change in MAO activity was found, so that a disturbance of the biosynthesis of monoamines as a result of immune aggression could be the possible cause of inhibition of the monoaminergic system.

    Notizen: Abstract The results of an electron-microscopic analysis of the adrenal medulla were compared with those of biochemical investigation of the blood catecholamine level during burn shock. In the erectile phase of burn shock adrenalin and noradrenalin stored in the depots is released, whereas in the torpid phase further liberation of the contents of the granules is accounted for entirely by adrenalin. A distinguishing feature of this period is the intensification of synthesis. After burning a holocrine type of secretion predominates and leads subsequently to exhaustion of the adrenal medulla. Reparative processes are characteristic of burns, but the synthesis and secretion of catecholamines take place less intensively than in healthy animals.

    Notizen: Abstract The ultrastructure of the synapses of the sensomotor cortex in dogs was studied in response to intravenous injection of typhoid endotoxin. The most marked changes were observed in the dendritic apparatus of the neurons. Activation in cortical structures was associated with an increase in the number of functioning synapses and reorganization of interneuronal connections. The extent of the contacting membranes and the number of synaptic vesicles were increased, and the contents of the dense-core vesicles were liberated. Depression was associated with degenerative changes in the synapses.
