Notes: A process was developed for simultaneous utilization of several food wastes and production of single cell protein by successive growth of Bacillus subtilis and Lactobacillus acidophilus. A collagen-derived substrate, starch, and cheese whey represented food wastes. Growth of B. subtilis on combined wastes yielded a biomass of 3.6 g/l and significantly modified the medium. Other bacilli also had similar potential for altering the original material. After fortification with cheese whey, the modified medium was used for growth of L. acidophilus as a second stage biomass production. Optimal growth conditions were determined. The feasibility of the process will be dependent upon increasing L. acidophilus biomass yields.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The throughput of a computer system depends especially on the performance of the secondary storage. In order to evaluate performance it is necessary to have models of drum and disk storage units. A good summary of the existing models is given in [2]. In the present paper an analytical and a simulation model for paging drums with the scheduling policies FIFO and SATF are developed. With these models it is possible to calculate variables which are important for the evaluation of system performance such as access time, system time and throughput. The model considers in addition to the usual parameters such as number of tracks, number of sectors and rotation time the probability that a page request is a read request or a write request. A write request always references the next unoccupied page of the drum. This is not considered in [1] and [2], in [4] it is considered but the results are inaccurate because of an incorrect assumption. From the results of the present paper we can see how important this differentiation is. The occupancy level of the drum is considered for the first time. It is shown, that the occupancy level influences the results only if it is close to one, but then the influence is considerable.

Notes: Abstract We show that the fast motion iteration method in General Relativity gives an asymptotic approximation to exact solutions of the reduced Einstein equations. Rigorous estimates of the error commited at each step of the iteration are derived.

Notes: Summary Using a radioisotope technique the reabsorption of creatinine from normal, inflamed and chronically obstructed bladders of rabbits was investigated. The reabsorption of creatinine from normal bladders was minimal. Chronic obstruction lead to a rise of the reabsorption rate. The most marked reabsorption however was found with the inflamed bladders. This difference of creatinine reabsorption is statistically significant and it was detectable in the 14C-creatinine content of the blood, 14C-creatinine content of the renal pelvis urine and in the activity loss in the bladder urine. The vesical reabsorption of creatinine corresponds in principle with the urea reabsorption which was investigated earlier by the same method. The extent of reabsorption is however different and urea is reabsorbed to a substantially greater extent.

Notes: Abstract Nearly frozen oxygen dissociation relaxation has been investigated behind oblique shocks. Photographs of the shock have been taken and density profiles of the relaxation zones have been measured by means of a multibeam-laser-differential interferometer. Calculations of the relaxation zones with different published dissociation rate coefficients have been done for evaluating the experiments.
