Notes: In incubated slices of guinea-pig cerebral cortex depolarizing agents such as veratridine and high potassium ions caused 50 to 80-fold increases of adenosine 3', 5'-cyclic monophosphate (cyclic AMP) levels and these responses were inhibited about 50% by 2, 3-diaminopropionate and 2'-deoxyadenosine: the former is a specific antagonist for glutamate-elicited accumulation of cyclic AMP and the latter selectively for adenosine-elicited accumulation. Methylxanthines were powerful ‘inhibitors’toward the responses not only to depolarizing agents but also to glutamate and adenosine. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that releases of both glutamate and adenosine are involved in the depolarization-elicited increases of cyclic AMP levels.Guanosine 3', 5'-cyclic monophosphate (cyclic GMP) levels in the slices were also elevated by veratridine as well as by glutamate, but always to a lesser extent (8 ∼ 12 times the control value) than cyclic AMP levels were. The responses for cyclic GMP both to veratridine and glutamate were ‘augmented’by methylxanthines and were not inhibited by 2, 3-diaminopropionate. Thus, glutamate appears to cause the increase of cyclic GMP levels through a different mechanism or site of action from that for cyclic AMP.

Notes: Summary Separate solutions of 0.015% benzylhydrazine dihydrochloride and 0.01% phenylhydrazine hydrochloride were given continuously in the drinking water of 6- and 5-week-old randomly bred Swiss mice for the remainder of their life. The consumption of benzylhydrazine dihydrochloride significantly increased the lung tumor incidence from 21 to 42% in the females, while in phenylhydrazine hydrochloride-treated mice, the incidence of blood vessel tumors rose significantly from 5 to 22% in females and from 6 to 20% in males, as compared with the controls. Histopathologically, the tumors were classified as adenomas and adenocarcinomas of lungs and angiomas and angiosarcomas of blood vessels. The study thus proves for the first time the tumorigenicity of benzylhydrazine dihydrochloride. It also confirms the tumor inducing ability of phenylhydrazine hydrochloride, which is used in medicine for treatment of polycythemia vera.

Notes: Summary A new method of autotomography for cerebral angiography, accomplished by means of a simple and handy device, has made it possible to take arbitrary tomographic planes of angiograms which result in clear cut views of the tomogram. The principle of the device is described, the method of use explained and representative films, produced by this new method, are demonstrated.

Notes: Abstract A general theory is given for the time evolution of nonlinear stochastic variables a(t) = {ai(t)} whose statistical distribution is changing due to the self-organization of “macroscopic” order. The dynamics of a(t) is conveniently expressed by self-consistent equations for the ensemble average x(t) = 〈a(t)〉, the supersystem, and for the deviations ξ(t) = a(t)−x(t), the subsystem; the systems are connected to each other by feedback loops in their dynamics. The time dependence of the variance and the correlation function ofξ(t) are studied in terms of relaxation toward local equilibrium underx(t) and dynamical coupling withx(t). A special example shows that the stochastic motions of subsystems are pulled together by the motion of the supersystem through feedback loops, and that this pull-together phenomenon occurs when symmetry-breaking instability exists in nonlinear systems.
