Notes: Summary The purification of a substance which protects mitochondrial activity against its decay in association with various cerebral pathologies, and the effect of this substancein vitro andin vivo have been mentioned. Defatted egg albumin was hydrolyzed with pronase, and diafiltrated through mesh, to obtain fractions of molecular weight less than 5,000. The diafiltrate was further fractionated using Sephadex G-25 column chromatography, and a fraction which had a protective action against the decay of mitochondrial DNP-ATPase activity was gathered. This digested egg albumin (DEA 5,000 S) showed no immunological reaction and seemingly penetrated well through the cell membrane. DEA 5,000 S prevented the decay of DNP-ATPase activity and swelling of brain mitochondria during agingin vitro. Also, the administration of DEA 5,000 Sin vivo shortened the duration of unconsciousnees and reduced EEG abnormalities in rats subjected to hypoxia in a special chamber filled with N2 gas. It is suggested that this Digested Egg Albumin has a marked action in restoring the function of metabolically impaired brain.

Notes: Summary A 500 mg intramuscular dose of carbenicillin produced peak levels averaging 147µg/ml after three hours in the first day full-term newborn infants, and 172µg/ml after one to two hours in infants five days of age. The fall of blood levels thereafter was delayed and serum half-life averaged 4.2 and 2.2 hours in both groups, almost four times and twice as long, respectively, as that reported in adults. Absorption from the injected site was also delayed in young newborns, as was shown by the delayed serum peak and small estimated absorption rate constant. This must be taken into consideration if the intramuscular route is chosen in young newborn infants. On the basis of serum half-life, an administration interval of 12 hours was recommended for newborns younger than four days, and eight hours for those five days of age or more.

Notes: Summary A 21 year old man who complained of headache, vomiting and olfactory hallucinations had a peculiar angiographic pattern on the cerebral angiograms, which consisted of bilateral coil formation of the anterior, middle and posterior cerebral arteries, while the external carotid and vertebrobasilar arteries and the cerebral veins are not involved. The etiology of this case is discussed and is based mainly on the angiographic findings as we were unable to obtain a postmortem examination. Although the etiology is the subject of much speculation, it is considered probably to be due to degenerative vascular changes.

Notes: Summary The thin-layer chromatographic behavior of 58 metals on an intermediately acidic cation exchanger, cellulose phosphate (P-cellulose), has been surveyed systematically in sulfuric acid and ammonium sulfate media (0.01–2.0 M). The Rf values for many bivalent and univalent metal ions on P-cellulose plates increase with increasing concentration of sulfate ions. Howerver, manganese (II), arsenic (III) and selenium (IV) are not adsorbed on the cellulose to any great extent. Beryllium (II) and other metals, which form either strong phosphate complexes or insoluble sulfate precipitates, are strongly retained on the P-cellulose. The thin-layer chromatographic separations of various metal ions of analytical interest were accomplished to demonstrate the use of Rf measurements for predicting separations in the acid and the sulfate media.

Notes: Summary The thin-layer chromatographic behavior of 57 metals on a weakly acidic cation exchanger, carboxymethyl (CM) cellulose, has investigated systematically in sulfuric acid (0.01–1.0 M) and the acidic ammonium sulfate media. Thin-layer plates of a microcrystalline cellulose, Avicel SF, were also used to compare with the chromatographic behavior of the metals in the acidic sulfate system. The Rf values obtained for many metals tested on CM-cellulose plates increase with increasing concentration of sulfuric acid. Most of metals tested are distributed chromatographically on the CM-cellulose in the low acid concentration. The characteristic retention of many metals, including sulfato-complexes forming metals, on the CM-cellulose can be observed in ammonium sulfate solutions of a low concentration of the acid. Useful multicomponent separations of analytical interest on CM-cellulose layers are presented to demonstrate the use of Rf measurements for predicting separations in the acid and the acidic ammonium sulfate systems.

Notes: Summary Thin-layers of an intermediately acidic cation exchanger, cellulose phosphate (P-cellulose), have systematically been used to study the chromatographic behavior of 58 inorganic ions in both hydrochloric acid and acid ammonium thiocyanate media (0.01–2.0 mol dm−3). In both solvent systems, the R f values of many bivalent cations increase with increasing concentration of the acid and thiocyanate. Polyvalent metal ions including beryllium (II) and the others are strongly retained on the P-cellulose in the acid and thiocyanate systems tested. Palladium(II), mercury(II), ruthenium(III), rhenium(VII), arsenic(III), selenium(IV) and tellurium(IV) are not adsorbed on P-cellulose to any great extent. For silver(I), indium(III), gold(III), and platinum(IV), there are marked differences in the chromatographic behavior between hydrochloric acid and acid ammonium thiocyanate systems. Multicomponent separations conducted on P-cellulose plates with these eluents are presented.

Notes: Summary Thin-layer chromatographic (TLC) behaviour of 51 inorganic ions on a strongly acidic cation-exchanger, sulphoethyl (SE) cellulose, has been studied systematically in sulphuric acid and ammonium sulphate media (0.01–0.2 mol dm−3). Some aspects of the adsorption behaviour of the inorganic ions on the SE-cellulose are compared with those on other cation-exchangers in the same eluent systems. The possibilities for TLC separations of analytical interest are also proposed on SE-cellulose in sulphuric acid and acid ammonium sulphate media.

Notes: Summary The thin-layer chromatographic behavior of 48 metals on cellulose phosphate (P-cellulose), an interediately acidic cation exchanger, has been examined systematically in aqueous phosphoric acid media (0.01–2 M). Differences in the Rf values among the metals in 1 M phosphoric acid are large enough to permit multicomponent separations of analytical interest.
