Notes: [Auszug] Using the nerve-cilia preparation made from the gill of the bivalve mollusc, Mytilus edulis, we have been able to obtain simultaneous records of neurally evoked mechanical and electrical responses of the ciliated cell. The 'lateral' cilia in this preparation have been known to show an abrupt ...

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Mit Poly(phthaloyl-l-lysin)-Mikrokapseln wurden potentiometrische Titrationen and elektrophoretische Messungen durchgeführt.
Notes: Summary Potentiometric titrations and electrophoretic mobility measurements were made on carboxylated polyphthalamide microcapsules prepared by the interfacial polycondensation method. The values of surface potential and zeta potential of the microcapsules were calculated by using a theoretical potentiometric equation and the simple Smoluchowski equation, respectively. The ionic strength of the medium was found to have no effect on the conformation of the polymer chains of the microcapsules. The negative surface potential obtained from potentiometric titration data rose first with increasing pH of the medium and then tended to level off as the pH approached 7 while the zeta potential as evaluated from electrophoresis data was found to change until the pH attained a value of 10. The cause for this difference in pH change between the surface potential and the zeta potential of the microcapsules was ascribed to the reason that potentiometric titration does not permit the detection of terminal amino groups of the polymer chains constituting the microcapsules, which are far smaller in number than the carboxyl groups, while electrophoresis can detect the presence of the terminal amino groups.

Notes: Summary 20 to 37 per cent of wild Japanese tree sparrows had neutralizing antibodies to Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV). Sparrows free of antibodies were inoculated with 10,000 plaque-forming units of JEV. None of the birds became clinically ill. Virus could be detected in blood plasma during the first 3 days after inoculation but not thereafter. Neutralizing antibodies started to appear at 4 days after inoculation and the response was of variable duration, in some cases extending up to 200 days after inoculation.

Notes: Summary Plasma dopamine β-hydroxylase activity of Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata fuscata) increased with age, and the developmental changes were similar to those of human beings. However, the adult level plasma DBH activity of various monkey species was much lower than that of human beings.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die potentiometrischen Titrierungen verschiedener Poly-(Phthaloyl-Aminosäuren)-Mikrokapseln wurden unter Verwendung von KOH, NaOH und LiOH als Titratoren ausgeführt.
Notes: Summary Potentiometric titrations of several poly (phthaloyl amino acid) microcapsules were performed using KOH, NaOH, and LiOH as titrants. The effects of amino acid residues, counterion species, and counterions concentration on the titration behavior of the microcapsules were examined by using a theoretical potentiometric equation which allows to calculate the intrinsic dissociation constants for the carboxyl groups and surface potentials of the microcapsules from titration data. The values ofpK 0 and ψ0 were found to be appreciably affected by amino acid residues in the polymers constituting the microcapsules. Lower pKo (higher acidity) and less negative surface potential (stronger counterion binding) were obtained in the titration with LiOH than in those with KOH and NaOH. As the counterion concentration in the medium increased, the dissociation of the carboxyl groups was promoted due to the decreased electrical work necessary to remove protons.

Notes: An investigation of steady state and transient photoconductivity in films of poly-(N-vinylcarbazole) equipped with SnO2 and metal electrodes is described. The studies have shown that photoinduced charge transfer, leading to hole injection into the polymer film, takes place with photons of energy greater than 1.8-1.9 eV. Dark conductivity studies on samples equipped with grounded guard rings have shown that carriers originating in the bulk of the polymer film dominate the dark current when the metal electrode is at negative bias. Thermionic hole emission from the SnO2 electrode is not observed.
