Notes: Abstract A high histamine content was found in all areas of human gastric and duodenal mucosa. In single subjects there was no general preference of histamine being located predominantly in fundus and corpus. In biopsy specimens of human corpus mucosa many histamine-containingo-PD reactive cells could be identified. In the sections treated previously witho-PD also many toluidine blue staining cells (mast cells) could be visualized. As shown by a transcription technique their place and number was the same as those ofo-PD reacting cells. It is concluded that histamine in human corpus mucosa is localized exclusively in mast cells which seem to participate in acid secretion and in duodenal ulcer disease in man.

Notes: Summary Since 1968 we have performed 19 extracorporeal liver perfusions for the treatment of 16 episodes of hepatic coma in 11 patients. Neurological improvement was noted in 7 patients. 5 of these 7 patients recovered full consciousness. 6 patients lived more than 4 days after perfusion, 2 of them made complete recovery and are alive. The indication, principle and the technique of the extracorporeal liver perfusion are illustrated and the results of other authors were summarized.

Notes: Summary A genetic system is proposed for establishing desirable strains of Rhizobium japonicum in soybean fields against the competition of aggressive but less productive indigenous strains. This system requires soybean cultivars which substantially exclude the indigenous strains while selectively admitting specific introduced strains. Rhizobium strains were identified which were infective, both in sand and in soil culture, with a host genotype (rj1rj1) which excludes most indigenous strains. Rhizobium infectivity was associated, for the first time, with the propensity to induce symptoms caused by rhizobitoxine production by the bacteria. The basis of this association is unknown. A possible enabling role for rhizobitoxine, or a precursor or derivative of rhizobitoxine, in the infection process is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The effect of nitrogen source on the free and bound amino acids of mycelium of Phymatotrichum omnivorum (Shear) Dugg was investigated. The largest free amino acid pool was present in the natural medium and the smallest in the synthetic medium. Phymatotrichum omnivorum was able to utilize different nitrogen sources with the best growth occurring with NH4NO3. The ratio of glycine to alanine and aspartic to glutamic was around 0.25 in the free amino acid pool and around 1 in the bound amino acid pool. The free pool of glutamic acid ranged from 5.6 % to 27.2 % depending upon the nitrogen source in the media. The free pool of alanine ranged from 35.7 % to 17.2 % in relation to the nitrogen source. Most other amino acid ratios did not vary significantly between the free amino acids and the bound amino acids.
