Description / Table of Contents: Summary In 137 patients with different kinds of cancer and different cancer stage, cell-mediated immunity was investigated by DNCB (dinitrochlorobenzene) and tuberculin test. These two skin tests were performed before and after cytostatic drug combination therapy. For a collective of cancer patients we found a positive correlation between skin reactions and prognosis and a negative correlation between skin reactions and cancer stage. After cytostatic drug therapy skin reactions could be significantly stronger. This could be observed in 50% when one test was positive before chemotherapy and in only 20% when both tests were negative before chemotherapy. There existed a significant correlation between an increased reaction after cytostatic drug therapy and objective tumor regression. When skin reactions decreased, tumor progression was seen in all cases. Due to these observations we use skin reactions as a good parameter for therapy results. When delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity impairs 2–3 weeks after chemotherapy, we then change the cytostatic drug combination immediately. We cannot say at this moment, whether an improvement of cytostatic drug therapy can be reached in this way.

Notes: Summary Thirty patients with disseminated malignant tumors received 0.5–2 mg vincristine/m2 as a continuous infusion for 1–5 days. Tumor regressions were observed in five patients (17%) who had all received polychemotherapy before. Side effects occurred in 22 patients (73%). Toxicity was mainly neurological in type, and reversible. Eleven patients (37%) suffered from deep nagging pain. Six patients (20%) had paralytic ileus; caerulein, a decapeptide, was given to two of them and led to a prompt resolution of the symptoms. Monitoring of immune parameters in ten patients revealed a transient depression of T and B cell function. Vincristine is highly toxic when given as continuous infusion in doses of 1.2 mg/m2 or more daily. Therefore this modality is not recommended for routine clinical use. Future studies of continuous vincristine infusions should use less than 1.2 mg vincristine/m2 daily.

Notes: Summary The analysis of variance normally is conducted under the assumption of no correlations between residuals. Sometimes this assumption is violated in plant breeding experiments. If it is ignored, the estimates of mean squares and variance components are biased. For some restricted models the correlation is estimated from experiments with Gerbera, tulips and potatoes. Often a positive correlation was found, but never a negative one. The consequences of such correlations are discussed.

Notes: Summary TransferrinC (TfC) subtypes were determined by isoelectric focusing (PAGIF) on samples from 90 carriers of the TfB and TfD alleles. In all cases of CB and CD heterozygotes only one of the two common subtypes of the TfC allele, TfC1 or TfC2, was observed. This is considered strong support for the hypothesis of two common alleles at the Tf locus. The different isofocusing patterns of rare B and D variants are compared with the results obtained after agarose gel electrophoresis (AGE).

Notes: Summary In a three-generation family, the segregation of an apparent silent allele at the GLO I locus in association with the rare HLA haplotype ‘AW30-CW4-BW35’ was observed in four members. In two cases the assumption of homozygosity at the GLO locus would lead to mother-child exclusions. Phenotypically, the GLO activity in the GLO 0 carriers is clearly diminished.

Notes: Summary The pattern of innervation of fibres containing AchE was examined by histochemical methods in fresh frozen sections of normal adult prostate, benign nodular hyperplasia, carcinoma of the prostate and the prepubertal prostate. Significant differences between the four groups investigated have been found.

Notes: Summary The electronic evaluation of volume differences of residual urine determination following cysto-uroflow metering takes place in three stages: 1. Integration of the bladder filling volume. 2. Integration of the micturition volume. 3. Electronic differentiation of the integrated volumes (bladder filling volume minus micturition volume equals residual urine volume). The residual urine volume can be read directly from the recorder.

Notes: Summary Following unilateral surgical ablation of the Cochlea in guinea pigs the medullary relay nuclei of the auditory pathway show a volume loss of the soma, nucleus and nucleolus of their neurons. At the 10th postoperative day these signs of transneuronal degeneration are found at a significant level, but they increase up to the 40–50th day. At the 60th day atrophy seems to move back.
