Notes: Summary Persistently infected cell lines of BHK21/WI-2 cells have been established by infection with the wild type rubella virus strain M-33. These cell lines, BHK-MP1 and BHK-MP2, showed immunity-like resistance to superinfection with M-33 virus at both 34° and 39.5° C. They also showed intrinsic interference with the replication of Newcastle Disease Virus at 34° C but not at 39.5° C. They released a small number of infectious virus particles which were temperature sensitive variants, being able to form plaques at 34° C, but not at 39.5° C on BHK21/WI-2 and on its derivative, BSR. When BHK-MP1 cells were cultured at 34° C in growth medium containing 10–20 µg/ml of 5-bromodeoxyuridine (BudR) there was a 5- to 10-fold increase in infectious virus in the medium as compared with the untreated controls. Mitomycin C (0.5 µg/ml) treatment for 7 hours likewise stimulated the release of virus from these cells. The enhancement of viral release by BudR was completely blocked by pretreatment with actinomycin D (5 µg/ml) for 3 hours prior to BudR treatment. Since the variant can be induced by these prophage inducers and inhibited by actinomycin D it is suggested that the viral genome is converted to a DNA provirus which is analogous to the lysogenic state of bacteriophage.

Notes: [Auszug] In the first series of experiments two Rabinowitchi (R) strains of M. smegmatis were used: R15 as the viomycin sensitive parental strain and the resistant mutant R33 which has an altered 30S subunit9. Intact 16S RNA from 30S subunits of both strains was isolated by the phenol method10. The ...

Notes: Abstract A simple discrete model which consists ofN limit-cycle oscillators interacting with a linear coupling is numerically investigated in order to study the sequence of oscillatory states leading to the onset of turbulence. The systems withN=2 and 3 are studied. The system ofN=2 does not exhibit a nonperiodic motion, whereas the system ofN=3 does exhibit a nonperiodic motion. It is shown that, as an external parameter changes, the system ofN=3 undergoes a sequence of bifurcations, exhibiting the singly periodic, doubly periodic and nonperiodic motions, successively. This is similar to the bifurcation scheme for the onset of turbulence proposed by Ruelle and Takens and experimentally shown by Gollub and Swinny in a rotating Couette flow. The successive bifurcations are investigated in details and new features are reported.

Notes: Summary The effects of partial hepatectomy on the energy charge (ATP+1/2ADP/ATP+ADP+AMP) and mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation were studied in normal and jaundiced rats. In normal rats the energy charge levels of the remnant liver decreased only slightly with a rise in the phosphorylative activity of the mitochondria at an early stage after hepatectomy, and then rapidly returned to normal. In jaundiced rats subjected to the common bile duct ligation the energy charge levels of the liver decreased to approximately 0.800 from 0.849 of normal value, though their mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation was within normal limits. In jaundiced rats the energy charge levels of the remnant liver after partial hepatectomy decreased markedly without a return toward normal. The mitochondrial phosphorylative activity increased to only about 50% of hepatectomized normal rats after partial hepatectomy. More than 70% of jaundiced rats died within 24 hours after partial hepatectomy. It is suggested that jaundice inhibits an enhancement of ATP generation to provide sufficient energy for high energy demand rather than the energy-requiring biosynthetic process in an early process of liver regeneration.
