Notes: Aims:  Other than ectopic expression of intestinal transcription factors, Cdx1 and Cdx2, the molecular mechanisms underlying gastric and intestinal phenotypes of human stomach adenocarcinomas have yet to be clarified in detail. We have reported that Sox2, an HMG-box gastric transcription factor, is expressed in normal gastric mucosa and down-regulated in intestinal metaplasia. Methods and results:  We analysed mRNA levels of Sox2 and other differentiation markers in 50 surgically resected stomach adenocarcinomas, immunohistochemically classified into gastric (G), gastric-and-intestinal (GI)-mixed, solely intestinal (I), and null (N) types. Sox2 was found to be transcribed in G and GI-mixed type adenocarcinomas in accordance with MUC5AC and MUC6 expression, while Cdx1 and Cdx2 were up-regulated in GI-mixed and I types along with the expression of MUC2 and villin. In the N type, both gastric and intestinal transcription factors were suppressed. Immunohistochemistry confirmed expression of Sox2 in MUC5AC+ lesions and Cdx2 localization together with MUC2. A stomach adenocarcinoma cell line, KATOIII, demonstrated both MUC5AC and Sox2, although MUC5AC mRNA was not detected in the Sox2+ AGS cell line. Conclusions:  Sox2 may play an important role in maintaining a gastric phenotype in stomach cancers as well as in normal tissue, in cooperation with other cofactor(s).

Notes: Aims:  Lymphomatous polyposis (LP) is considered to represent mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. However, a few reports have suggested that some are follicular lymphoma (FL) or mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomas. In this study, we analysed 35 patients and clarified the clinicopathological features of LP.Methods and results:  Paraffin-embedded tissue samples were stained immunohistochemically and analysed by tissue-fluorescence in situ hybridization (T-FISH) for IGH/CCND1 (cyclin D1) and IGH/BCL2. The average age of the patients was 58.3 years. Over half of the cases showed gastric, duodenal, small intestinal, ileocaecal and sigmoid colonic lesions (15, 19, 15, 16 and 16 cases, respectively). Phenotypically, cases were classified into three types of MCL (cyclin D1+ CD5+ CD10–) (n = 12), FL (cyclin D1– CD5– CD10+) (n = 14) and MALT (cyclin D1– CD5– CD10–) (n = 9). T-FISH identified 11 of the 11 examined cases with MCLs to have IGH/CCND1, while seven of 10 cases with FL had IGH/BCL2, and none of the MALT cases were positive for IGH/CCND1 or IGH/BCL2. At the study endpoint, five of 12 patients with MCL were dead, two of 14 with FL and one of nine with MALT were dead of other disease. Event-free survival analysis showed significantly poorest outcome in MCL, followed by FL, while MALT was associated with a favourable outcome (P = 0.0040).Conclusions:  Our study emphasizes the importance of differentiating MCL, FL and MALT of LP in evaluating prognosis and hence the most suitable therapeutic regimen.

Notes: To investigate the strength efficiency of fly ash in concrete, the contribution of fly ash to strength, k value was calculated with the equation: the strength difference between fly ash concrete and control concrete with no fly ash due to the different fly ash content divides by the strength difference between both control concrete with no fly ash due to the different cement content which equals to the former different fly ash content. The k values were organized with fly ash specific surface area, concrete curing condition and age of specimens. Based on a large number of datacollected from several proceedings and journals published in Japan during 1981 to 2003, the influences of fly ash property, mixture proportion and curing condition on k value were investigated. Within the range of study the following observations were made: (1) When fly ash concrete kept in moist curing, the k value of fly ash with specific surface area from 250 to 500 m2/kg is averagely 0.5 to 0.6 or higher at an age of 91 days and later, whereas that of fly ash with specific surface area from150 to 250 m2/kg is around 0.4 to 0.5, and with some cases contributing little to the strength. (2) In the range of a portland cement content of 250 to 450 kg/m3, the strength contribution tends to increase as the cement content increases. (3) The contributions of fly ash to strength at 91 and 364 days are 1.44 to 1.97 times as large as those at 28 days, respectively, by standard curing, but conversely decrease to 0.75 to 0.79 times those at 28 days by air curing

Notes: Exposure test on chloride ion penetration behavior into Concrete in coastal area wasimplemented. The distances between concrete specimens and coast were changed in the range from 50 to 150 meters, and water-cement ratios (W/C) were 45, 55, 60 and 65 %. The total chloride ion content at each different depth from surface of concrete specimen was measured at the age of 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 10 years. In this paper, apparent diffusion coefficient (D) and chloride ion content on surface of concrete (C0) were calculated by inverse analyses from the measured total chloride ion content, and the chloride ion penetration behavior was simulated using the calculated D and C0. As a result, the chloride ion penetrated in concrete with a W/C of 60 % at a point 50 m from the sea for 10 years was estimated approximately 0.2 kg/m3

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wurde die Temperaturabhängigkeit der Grenzflächenspannung im System Öl-Wasser bei Gegenwart nichtionischer Tenside untersucht.
Notes: Summary Changes in the interfacial tension of an oil-water-nonionic surfactant system with temperature were investigated using liquid paraffin and squalane as oils and commercial polyoxyethylene oleyl ether and polyoxyethylene stearyl ether as surfactants. The surfactants were found to behave differently depending upon the number of moles of ethylene oxide contained therein; with 10-molecule ethoxylate as a boundary, a surfactant with a smaller number of moles of ethylene oxide caused an increase in the interfacial tension as the temperature rose while a surfactant with a larger number of moles of ethylene oxide caused a decrease. The 10-molecule ethoxylate caused substantially no changes in the interfacial tension with temperature. This phenomenon of no changes in the interfacial tension with temperature was explained by considering a broad distribution of EO in the surfactant. The particle size and stability of the resultant emulsions depended on the changes in the interfacial tension with temperature. In a system containing a surfactant with a smaller number of moles of ethylene oxide than 10 moles, the particle size decreased and the stability improved as the emulsification temperature fell. When a surfactant with a larger number of moles of ethylene oxide is used, however, the particle size decreased and the stability improved as the emulsification temperature rose. At the 10-molecule ethoxylate, both the particle size and the stability did not change appreciably with emulsiflcation temperature.

Notes: Summary Neuronal inclusions within the lateral terminal nucleus of the accessory optic system in Galago were identified as lipids. Intact L-fibers are essential for their formation. After eye enucleation, which interrupted the L-fibers, the number of cells containing lipid droplets decreased significantly.
