    Notes: Abstract The calorimeter developed in this laboratory for isothermal enthalpy-of-dilution measurements is adapted for use as an adiabatic calorimeter for freezing-point studies. Results are obtained for ethanol solutions in cyclohexane at mole fractions of ethanol from 0.001 up to 0.08. Activities calculated from the results are used to test association models.

    Notes: Abstract Apparent molar volumes of urea are measured over a temperature range in water, methanol, ethanol, formamide, DMF and DMSO. The limiting apparent molar volumes show a large variation in different solvents. In marked contrast to the situation in water, the temperature dependence of the limiting apparent molar volumes in the nonaqueous solvents is slight. The concentration dependence is discussed qualitatively in terms of solute association.

    Notes: Abstract A stepwise hydration-equilibrium model for aqueous electrolytes is developed and shown to give a good quantitative account of osmotic coefficients of strong, highly soluble electrolytes up to concentrations of 20–30 m. The main parameters needed are two equilibrium constants describing the stepwise hydration and the number of hydration sites. Choice of ion-size parameter has only a minor effect.

    Notes: Abstract A microbiological water quality study of Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park (HSSWP) and surrounding areas was undertaken. Samples were collected in November of 1997 (seven sites) and again in November of 1998 (nine sites). Fecal bacterial concentrations (total and fecal coliforms, Clostridium perfringens, and enterococci) were measured as relative indicators of fecal contamination. F+-specific coliphage genotyping was performed to determine the source of fecal contamination at the study sites. Bacterial levels were considerably higher at most sites in the 1997 sampling compared to the 1998 sampling, probably because of the greater rainfall that year. In November of 1997, 2 of the 7 sites were in violation of all indicator standards and guidance levels. In November of 1998, 1 of 9 sites was in violation of all indicator standard and guidance levels. The highest concentrations of all fecal indicators were found at a station downstream of the animal holding pens in HSSWP. The lowest levels of indicators were found at the Homosassa Main Spring vent. Levels of fecal indicators downstream of HSSWP (near the point of confluence with the river) were equivalent to those found in the Southeastern Fork and areas upstream of the park influences. F+ specific RNA coliphage analysis indicated that fecal contamination at all sites that tested positive was from animal sources (mammals and birds). These results suggest that animal (indigenous and those in HSSWP) and not human sources influenced microbial water quality in the area of Homosassa River covered by this study.

    Notes: Abstract The sub-surface and surface damage produced by alumina and diamond grinding wheels has been studied as a function of material removal rate. Sub-surface damage is characterised in all cases by a discrete, dense layer of dislocations adjacent to the machined surface. The depth of the layer increases with material removal rate. The nature of the surface damage depends on the mechanism of material removal. As long as the cutting points are unloaded and the residue can escape the material is removed in a brittle manner. This is always the case for the diamond wheel and occurs for low rates of material removal with the alumina wheel. When the cutting surface is loaded with residue, the tool-workpiece interface temperature becomes so high that the material is removed by plastic flow. The finished surface is burnished. Unfortunately as the burnished surface cools down thermal quenching produces a network of surface cracks.
