Notizen: In response to the comment on theory and simulation of light filamentation in laser-produced plasma the authors believe that the criticism overstates the outcome of choosing one form of thermal conduction over another. (AIP)

Notizen: The Landau-fluid model is a recently introduced fluid-moment closure scheme [G. W. Hammett and F. W. Perkins, Phys. Rev. Lett. 64, 3019 (1990)] that was designed to include kinetic dissipative effects like Landau damping in fluid calculations. The fluid-moment hierarchy is terminated by assuming linear relationships among the retained moments in Fourier-transform space, with coefficients determined by matching the plasma response to that obtained from a kinetic analysis. This paper generalizes the technique to the full range of ion and electron collisionality and applies it to a new fluid simulation code constructed to study laser filamentation in underdense plasmas [Berger et al., Phys. Fluids B 5, 2243 (1993)]. By matching the ion-acoustic complex frequency derived from the fluid model with that predicted by collisional, Fokker–Planck, and kinetic analyses, the specific heat ratio, thermal conductivity coefficient, and viscosity coefficient for ions and the thermal conductivity coefficient for electrons are determined as functions of the wave number k. For frequencies much less than the pump frequency this leads to a fourth-order polynomial dispersion relation whose spectrum includes damped ion-acoustic waves as well as filamentation modes whose stability depends on the pump strength. An analytic instability threshold condition on the laser intensity is derived from which the relative importance of ponderomotive and thermal drives can be assessed. Expressions for the linear susceptibilities in the presence of a finite-amplitude pump are also given, which might prove useful for understanding spectral linewidths for Thomson scattering.

Notizen: A qualitative understanding of the time dependence of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) provides estimates of the amount of temporal growth that occurs in current inertial confinement fusion and short laser pulse interaction experiments when the growth is limited by the length of the experiment or by motion of the "hot spots'' of the laser intensity pattern induced by beam smoothing. In the weak coupling limit, the instantaneous growth rate depends upon the plasma initial conditions early in time, is proportional to t−1/2 later in time, and asymptotically approaches the absolute growth rate (in the absence of damping). When the instability is strongly coupled, the growth rate depends upon the plasma initial conditions early in time but is proportional to t−1/3 later in time. When the growth rate drops to a value comparable to that of the ion acoustic frequency, the instability becomes effectively weakly coupled. The effects of damping are also discussed.

Notizen: Supersonic, counterstreaming plasmas were produced by ablating plasma from the inside surfaces of two parallel disks made of aluminum and magnesium, respectively, with a 0.53 μm laser at an intensity of 1014 W/cm2 for 1.3 nsec. Diagnostics included holographic interferometry, a time-integrated x-ray pinhole camera and a gated x-ray crystal spectrograph with imaging slits. The plasmas interpenetrate for the first half of the laser pulse but stagnate once the electron density exceeds 5×1020 cm−3. Spectroscopic measurements suggest a coronal electron temperature of ∼800 eV and an ion temperature of ∼15 keV in the stagnated plasma. The observations are in good agreement with a two ion fluid model of interpenetrating plasmas in which the dominant slowing down process is ion–ion collisions.

Notizen: An experiment that observed the collision of aluminum laser produced (Al) and magnesium (Mg) plasmas is described in an accompanying paper [Phys. Fluids B 4, (square, solid)(square, solid)(square, solid)(square, solid) (1992)]. Time- and space-resolved measurements were made of the electron density, Lyα and Heα lines of Al and Mg, and x-ray pinhole images. These measurements are interpreted with the use of a two ion fluid hydrodynamic model and a time-dependent atomic physics model. The qualitatively successful modeling of the line emission confirms that at early times, the Al interpenetrates the counterstreaming Mg plasma and deposits in the dense Mg region. At late times, the Al plasma stagnates against the Mg plasma, approximately halfway between the initial disk surfaces.

Notizen: Backscattered light at wavelengths near the incident laser frequency of 0.35 μm irradiated 0.4 μm thick gold targets has been spectrally and temporally resolved. At the start of the laser pulse, the wavelength of the backscattered light is longer than that of the incident laser, and the wavelength subsequently increases with time. The observed scaling of the backscatter level with the incident laser intensity, the bandwidth of the backscatter spectrum, and the absolute value of the backscatter flux, are adequately described by absolute growth of the stimulated Brillouin scatter instability from thermal noise, provided that realistic hot spots in the incident laser profile are taken into account. The differences between backscattered light from high-Z and low-Z targets are discussed.

Notizen: A desire to interpret recent experiments on filamentation with and without beam-smoothing techniques led to the development of a three-dimensional fluid model that includes the effects of nonlocal electron transport and kinetic ion damping of the acoustic waves. The damping of the electron-temperature perturbations that drive thermal filamentation by nonlocal electron conduction, valid in the diffusive limit, is supplemented in the present model by electron Landau damping in the collisionless limit when the wavelength of the perturbation is much less than the electron–ion scattering mean-free path. In this collisionless limit, Landau damping of the "temperature'' fluctuations makes ponderomotive forces universally more important than thermal forces. Simulations in plasmas of current interest illustrate the relative importance of thermal and ponderomotive forces for strongly modulated laser beams. Although thermal forces may initiate filamentation, the most intense filaments are associated with ponderomotive forces. The present simulations of filamentation model well the density perturbations observed in experiments [Young et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 61, 2336 (1988)]. In addition, a simple criterion is obtained analytically and supported by simulations for stabilization of filamentation by laser beam-smoothing techniques such as induced spatial incoherence and random phase plates [Eq. (1)].

Notizen: The interpenetration of two supersonically moving plasmas is affected by both collective modes of oscillation and Coulomb collisions. Two potentially important plasma instabilities, an electrostatic ion two stream and an electromagnetic ion Weibel, are considered and shown to be stabilized if only a small fraction of ion kinetic energy is converted to heat. For low-density, highly supersonic flows, the mean free path for slowing down (dominated in most cases of interest by ion–ion collisions) can be larger than or comparable to the system size. To develop an understanding of these plasmas, a unique hydrodynamic model has been developed that allows interpenetration but explicitly converts kinetic energy into heat as the ions slow down. The model is applied to the collision of two plasmas created by heating two parallel foils.

Notizen: Summary We compared heart rate variability measures of 11 normal children (4–12 years) to 23 normal adults (21–43 years) to study the effect of age on heart rate variability measures. Children had a significantly higher supine and standing heart rate and lower supine and standing systolic diastolic blood pressure. Children also had a significantly higher supine standard deviation of HR, supine low frequency (0.01–0.05 Hz) (p〈0.005), supine high frequency (0.2–0.5 Hz) (p〈0.001), and standing high frequency powers (p〈0.005) compared to adults. The ratio of mid frequency (0.07–0.15 Hz) to high frequency power (0.2–0.5 Hz) upon standing was significantly lower in children (p〈0.005). While there was a significant increase of the mid frequency power from supine to standing posture in the adult group (p〈0.02), there was no such significant increase in children. There were also significant negative correlations between age and supine low frequency, mid frequency, and high frequency powers, and standing high frequency power. These findings illustrate a decrease of cholinergic and an increase of adrenergic modulation of heart rate variability with age (4–43 years).
