Notizen: —The distribution, localization and changes in intensity of γ-aminobutyrate transaminase (4-aminobutyrate: 2-oxoglutarate aminotransferase, EC 2.6.1.19) in rat brain have been studied during the first 20 days of postnatal life by a histochemical technique.Enzyme activity at birth was seen only in Purkinje cells of the cerebellar cortex where it increased markedly during the first 20 days. A rapid increase in enzyme activity was seen in regions of the hind-brain after 3 days but a slower increase was apparent in areas of the fore- and mid-brain. The results indicated that by 10 days post-partum nerve cell GABA-T activity had developed in the majority of brain areas studied, while glial cell GABA-T activity developed between 10 and 15 days post-partum.Evidence is presented which indicates that there is a discontinuous function of GABA-T in the developing brain.

Notizen: —The distribution, localization and changes in intensity of enzymes in major metabolic pathways of brain metabolism during the first 16 days postnatal life of the rat anterior hypothalamus are reported. Thiamine pyrophosphatase, acid phosphatase and 5′-nucleotidase showed rapid increases in activity between 0 and 5 days whilst AChE, Mg2+–ATPase and monoamine oxidase exhibited little or no activity before 3 days. Most enzymes showed a moderate intensity at 16 days in all nuclei whilst for some enzymes of phosphate metabolism the reaction was strong. The precocity of some enzymes particularly monoamine oxidase, lactate dehydrogenase and NADH2-diaphorase seen in other regions at birth, was not apparent in hypothalamic nuclei. Comparisons are made with other regions of the brain and the findings discussed in relation to function.

Notizen: It is a curious fact that the much maligned ontological argument to prove the existence of God has in recent times enjoyed a revival of interest to which even Karl Barth, the arch-enemy of natural theology has contributed; but since the revival of interest has appared in a wide diversity of intellectual contexts, both philosophical and theological, the revival is itself almost as problematic as the argument itself.

Notizen: In recent years there has been a great deal written about religious language, but very often the reader is left guessing as to what answer the writer he has been considering would have given to the question, Is there a God? Does God exist? Is there some reality for which the word ‘God’ is the accepted name? This may seem to many an unsatisfactory state of affairs, for at least the plain man is impatient of what he deems to be undue sophistication, especially on ultimate questions of this kind; and he would much prefer, as he might put it, to get down to brass tacks. Consequently, the plain man would probably be very unhappy about the question which I have posed regarding the possible logical placing of the name ‘God’, and he would greatly prefer to see it put in straightforward fashion as the question, Does God exist or not?

Notizen: The purpose of this paper is to take account of the contribution to religious thought of Professor Nels F. S. Ferré with special reference to two fairly recent books, Reason in Religion and The Living God of Nowhere and Nothing. For more than a quarter of a century Dr Ferré has occupied a prominent place in the field of theological education in the United States, first at Andover Newton Theological School and for the last few years at Parsons College; and by articles and books he has proved himself a most prolific writer. By and large, moreover, he has persistently evinced an evangelical concern to be faithful to the fulness of the Christian Gospel, so that if by chance, at this point or that, he is deemed to have fallen short, that has certainly happened, not by intention, but in spite of it, by the logical development of his presuppositions. In a much earlier book he offered his readers a choice, ‘either a staggering faith beyond our wildest imagination, centred in God, or else the darkness of description, explaining nothing’ and there is no doubt which alternative he himself preferred. ‘Feeding back modern man his own thoughts and feelings will not nourish him. He must be helped to see and to accept the truth that saves.’ ‘Unless “God was in Christ reconciling the world unto himself” in a historically factual way, without all cavil or equivocation, I know no Gospel for mankind.’

Notizen: Evidence for the presence of the metal-binding protein metallothionein, MT, in higher plants is equivocal. Although a number of MT-like metal complexes have been isolated from plants, the chemical structures of most of these compounds have not been fully elucidated. Recently a novel class of plant peptides, poly (γ-glutamylcysteinyl) glycines, (γEC)nG, have been discovered. These peptides bind metal ions, and in the presence of such ions the amount of (γEC), G in plant cells increases. The presence of peptide bonds through the γ-carboxyl group of glutamate, rather than the α-carboxyl group, suggests that these peptides are not encoded by structural genes but are the products of biosynthetic pathways. Cells which are resistant to supra-optimal concentrations of certain metal ions over-produce (γEC)n G. (γEC)n G. may be functional analogues of MT. Whether or not some plants also produce MT is an important question which remains to be answered.
