    Notes: Abstract The thickening process of polyethylene single crystals was simulated with computer by the Monte Carlo method. According to the experimental results in the previous report, the time dependence of the long period changed greatly with annealing temperature; at lower temperatures the long period increased gradually, while at high temperatures the long period rapidly increased at a very early stage of annealing and then increased gradually after passing through a plateau. Through computer simulation, it was shown that such a great change in the time dependence of the long period with annealing temperature can be explained by combining two mechanisms: (A) sliding diffusion of molecular segments along the chain axis and (B) local melt-recrystallization (namely, local melting followed by recystallization).

    Description / Table of Contents: Übersicht Das erweiterte Newton-Verfahren bildet zusammen mit der Methode der finiten Differenzen ein wirksames Werkzeug zur Berechnung der Kriecheigenschaften von rotationssymmetrischen Schalen. Dabei wird eine Kriechtheorie nach v. Mises sowie ein Potenzgesetz für das Kriechen zugrunde gelegt. Als Beispiele werden eine einfach gelagerte kreiszylindrische Schale mit freien Rändern sowie eine eingespannte Kugelschale berechnet, die beide durch Innendruck belastet sind. Die Ergebnisse für die Zylinderschale werden mit den von Rabotnov erhaltenen Ergebnissen für eine halb-unendliche Sandwich-Schale verglichen.
    Notes: Summary The extended Newton method combined with the method of finite-differences is shown to be a powerful means to the steady-state creep analysis of shells of revolution. The creep theory of von Mises type and the power creep law are assumed. As numerical examples, a simply-supported circular cylindrical shell with open ends and a clamped spherical shell, subjected to internal pressure respectively, are analysed. The results of calculation of the cylindrical shell, in particular, are compared with those of semi-infinite sandwich shell obtained by Rabotnov.

    Description / Table of Contents: Übersicht Das elastisch-plastische Biegen einer einfach gelagerten Ringplatte wird theoretisch untersucht, wobei der Einfluß der Membrankräfte berücksichtigt wird. Der innere Rand der Platte ist frei gelagert und trägt eine stetig verteilte Querlast. Es wird ein homogenes, isotropes und ideal elastisch-plastisches Material vorausgesetzt, das der v. Misesschen Fließbedingung und dem Henkyschen Spannungs-Dehnungs-Gesetz genügt. Die Rechenergebnisse werden diskutiert und mit entsprechenden Versuchsergebnissen verglichen, wobei besonderen Wert auf die Beziehung zwischen dem wirklichen Materialverhalten und den üblicherweise in der Theorie verwendeten Annahmen gelegt wird. Die Ergebnisse werden außerdem mit entsprechenden Berechnungsergebnissen verglichen, bei denen die Membrankräfte vernachlässigt wurden, so daß der Einfluß dieser Kräfte deutlich wird.
    Notes: Summary The elasto-plastic bending of a simply supported annular plate with a free inner edge upon which an uniformly distributed lateral load acts is theoretically investigated, taking into account the influence of the membrane forces. A homogeneous and isotropic elasto-perfectly-plastic material satisfying the Mises' yield condition and the Hencky's stess-strain relation is assumed. The theoretical results are discussed and compared with experimental results obtained with a plate of mild steel; the relation between the real behavior of the actual material and the usual assumptions used in the analysis is emphazised. The theoretical result is also compared with the result of an analysis in which the membrane forces were neglected; in this manner the influence of these forces is shown.

    Notes: Summary An overlapping distribution of catecholamine-containing cells and proenkephaline—A derived peptide-containing neurons have been identified in the rat medulla oblongata. However, it is not evident whether the coexistence of these bioactive substances occurs in the same neurons or not. Therefore, we examined the coexistence of catecholamine and methionine-enkephalin-Arg6-Gly7-Leu8 (MEAGL), a proenkephaline—A derived peptide, using a combination of histofluorescence and peroxidase-anti-peroxidase (PAP) immunohistochemical (modified formaldehyde-glutalaldehyde (Faglu)) methods on the same tissue sections. We found one third of A1/C1 catecholamine fluorescent cells show MEAGL-like immunoreactivity.

    Notes: Summary A series of plastic strain controlled cyclic tests was performed to facilitate the modelling of cyclic plasticity under general multiaxial loading conditions. The tests were carried out by applying combined axial force and torque to thin-walled tubular specimens of type 316 stainless steel at room temperature. Torsional and circular cycles of the equivalent plastic strain amplitude (von Mises type) ofΔe p /2=0.1, 0.2 and 0.4% were specified. The results showed that the cyclic hardening under the circular cycles is 1.5–1.8 times as large as that under the torsional cycles of the same value ofΔe p /2 in the saturated state. It was also observed that, in the case of torsional cycles, these saturated values are not affected by the sequence of plastic strain cycles in the past, while in the case of circular cycles, they are affected by the cycles of larger amplitudes. Furthermore, it was elucidated that this memory effect depends only on the cycles of the largest amplitude in the past.

    Notes: Summary The biological significance of the low level of symmetric and non-specific RNA synthesis catalyzed by the core RNA polymerase devoid of the sigma factor has been analyzed. Shearing of DNA's including T4 DNA markedly increased the template activities with the core enzyme but not with the holoenzyme. This finding suggests that RNA synthesis by the core enzyme increases concomittantly with the production of termini in DNA. Double-stranded circular DNA's such as λdv and fd-RFI were found to be inactive as templates for the core enzyme, but were made active by introduction of single-strand nicks with deoxyribonuclease. In contrast, single-stranded circular DNA (ϕX 174) served as a good template for RNA synthesis by the core RNA polymerase. These findings suggest that the sigma factor may activate double-stranded DNA at the promotor sites by creating proper initiation points for RNA synthesis. Partial separation of duplex DNA into single-stranded forms at the promotor sites could be one of the processes in the reaction catalyzed by the holoenzyme containing the sigma factor.
