Notes: Abstract The processes responsible for the emission of Na-D line in the Earth's atmosphere and laboratory are briefly reviewed. From the laboratory results of Ghoshet al. (1970), the rate coefficient of reactions exciting sodium D line is estimated to be 4.73×10−25 cm6/sec2, and its intensity in the nightglow is found to be about 114R in summer and 302R in winter.

Notes: Abstract The excitation mechanism for O2 Herzberg Bands as given by Young and Black (1966) is examined. It is found that O2 Herzberg Bands are heavily quenched by N atoms, while (0,0) and (0,1) Atmospheric Bands are quenched mainly by CO, NO, O2 and N2, NO, O2 respectively. The emission of Herzberg Bands is found to arise from two layers centred at 80 and 100 km. The rate coefficients of a number of quenching reactions involving atmospheric gases are obtained theoretically.

Notes: Abstract For the tests in which the score on an item is not restricted to 0 and 1, but is any number on a continuous scale, a procedure for estimating an examinee's true score is given. For the case of 0, 1 item scoring this problem was considered by Lord [1959]. Following Lord, the least squares estimation procedure is used and the regression coefficient is obtained, which is compared with the generalized KR(20) and KR(21) formulas. Also, results are discussed using analysis of variance models.

Notes: Abstract The chromosome complement of 2 male and 15 female adult squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) have been studied in peripheral blood and kidney cultures and bone marrow preparations. The diploid chromosome number is 44. Six of the chromosome pairs are metacentric (isobrachial), 9 pairs submetacentric (heterobrachial) and the remaining 6 pairs are acrocentric (cephalobrachial). The X chromosome is the longest submetacentric (heterobrachial), ranking 5 in order of decreasing size. The Y chromosome is the smallest acrocentric (cephalobrachial) of the complement. A female and male karyotype is presented.

Notes: Summary Life history ofAtherigona varia soccata Rond. under field conditions had been worked out on hybrid, sorghum CSH-3. The female laid eggs singly on the lower surface of the leaf blade. Single female laid 23–27 eggs in its life span. The eggs hatched in 1–3 days. There are four larval instars which were completed in 10–15 days. Pupation took place either in the stem of seedlings or in the soil. The pupal period varied from 6 to 9 days. The total life cycle took 17 to 27 days.

Notes: Summary The quantitative estimation of chlorophyll in 28 wheat varieties showed significant differences. The amount of chlorophyll ranged from 1.78 to 2.95 mg/g of green leaf. The character in the F2 generation of the cross between C273 and S413 showed monogenic control with no dominance. The heritability of the character was very high.

Notes: Meiotic chromosome behaviour was studied in two collections of Paspalum paspaloides (Michx.) Scribn. In one of these chromosome mosaicism, restitution nuclei, multinucleate microsporocytes and multipolar and divergent spindles were observed. Chromosome mosaicism resulted from abnormal cell cleavage. In microsporocytes exhibiting chromosome mosaicism, the number of univalents per cell decreased as the chromosome number per cell increased. The increase in chromosome number brought it close to the euploid number (2n=60). Chromosome mosaicism never involved any increase above the cuploid number. In the other collection, meiosis was relatively normal.

Notes: Summary The boundary layer equations for axisymmetric flow of an incompressible second-order fluid have been deduced. The flow of such a fluid near a stagnation point when the main stream outside the boundary layer fluctuates in magnitude but not in direction has been discussed. The velocity distribution is found for various values of the steady mean in two limiting cases of small and large values of the frequency of the oscillation of the main stream. The frequency for which two approximate solutions overlap has been calculated in each case.
