Notes: Summary A case of testicular feminization is described. The patient, brought up as a girl up to the age of three years, then as a boy, suffers from his predominantly female sex characteristics and requests sex reversal. Physical examination: male nuclear sex, inguinal testes with normally developed Leydig cells, predominantly female external genitalia without internal genitalia, hypertrophy of the clitoris, development of mammae at time of puberty, pubic hair of the female type, no facial or axillary hair. Endocrinologic findings: high normal gnoadotrophins, plasma testosterone in the upper normal range for males, slight increase of testosterone after injection of HCG, no increase after ACTH, low normal oestrogene. In cases of testicular feminization with hypertrophy of the clitoris and other signs of masculinization, psycho-sexual problems often arise. Transsexualism has not yet been described even in the incomplete syndrome. Our observation points to the importance of visible signs of intersexuality for the determination of the sex after birth and for the acceptance of the gender role in childhood and adolescence.

Notes: Abstract— We describe a method for the fluorometric determination of 5-hydroxyindoles in the physiological range of 0.010–1.30 μg/ml of whole blood by means of an autoanalytical procedure. Serotonin is dialysed free from haemolysed blood constituents and a complex between 5-HT and o-phthaldialdehyde is formed in the dialysand to provide a considerable increase over the native fluorescence of 5-HT in strong acid. The method has been evaluated and considered to be accurate for the continuous monitoring of levels of 5-HT in whole blood and for the determination of cerebral arteriovenous differences. The range of values for human patients with cerebrovascular disease was 0.09–0.34 μg/ml of whole blood. In experimental studies on the baboon the range was 0.538–1.28 μg/ml. A mean positive cerebral arteriovenous difference for 5-HT (and possibly other 5-hydroxyindoles) of 0.037 μg/ml was measured in 10 baboons. This finding suggests the possibility of physiological movement of 5-HT and 5-hydroxyindoles into brain across the blood-brain barrier.

Notes: Abstract. Male weanling rats were fed a diet containing 1.3 mg zinc/kg diet and controls the same diet supplemented by 40 mg /zinc/kg diet. The rates of cell division and upward migration in the cheek epithelium were obtained from counts of labelled cells in animals sacrificed one hour and three days following intraperitoneal injection of 1 μCi tritiated thymidine/g body weight. A 3.4-fold increase over the number of labelled cells in controls was observed one hour after thymidine administration and a 2.7-fold increase three days later. Ratios of labelled cells at three days and one hour were 4.96 in controls and 3.99 in experimental animals. The percentage distribution of labelled cells in successive subdivisions of epithelium was identical in both groups. The number of labelled cells near the junction of granular and keratin layers was 2.9-fold greater in the experimental animals. It is suggested that the zinc-deficient cheek epithelium of the rat might be a useful model for the study of pathological conditions associated with increased rates of cell proliferation.

Notes: Abstract It is demonstrated that benomyl, applied as a soil drench, is highly efficient in reducing the quantity of mycelium in muskmelon plants infected byFusarium oxysporum f. sp.melonis. When treated before symptoms appear, plants are generally cured. The blending technique used for assessing fungal spread in the xylem vessels is particularly convenient for studying the action of a systemic fungicide in a plant with vascular wilt.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary 1. Female mice infected intraperitoneally with Coxsackie virus B3 (250,000 LD50 for newborn mice) before mating protected their offspring passively against a challenge-inoculation with 500 LD50 doses of the homotype virus given on the first day of life. Mice delivered close to term by caesarean section from Coxsackie virus infected mothers were highly resistant to the challenge dose of virus. Thus they had acquired their type-specific immunity in utero in consequence of maternal antibodies passed either across the placenta or by way of the yolk-sac. The milk of infected mothers had only little protective effect. The average number of newborn mice per litter was significantly smaller in the group of infected females as compared with the group of non-infected females. 2. One to 3 days before term pregnant mice were infected intraperitoneally with Coxsackie virus B3. Suckling mice nursed by these females showed paralysis and high mortality (59/77 animals), whether they were born of noninfected or infected mothers. Coxsackie virus B3 (0.5 or 2.5 millions LD50 for newborn mice) administered intraperitoneally to mice during the last 3 days of pregnancy or within 2 hours after delivery was recovered from the content of stomach and also from skelettal muscles of suckling mice nursed by these females, thus demonstrating the transmission of this virus by way of the milk. No evidence for or against transplacental passage of the virus was found. Some of the pregnant mice infected in the last days of gestation showed increased susceptibility to Coxsackie virus B3.
Notes: Zusammenfassung 1.
