Notizen: Quaking mice, neurological mutants of the C57 BL/6J strain have a markedly deficient myelination of the CNS(Sidman, Dickie and Appel, 1964). Many studies have been carried out on their lipids (Jacque, Harpin and Baumann, 1969; Neskovic, Nussbaum and Mandel, 1969, 1970; Kurihara, Nussbaum and Mandel, 1970; Sarlieve, Neskovic and Mandel, 1971; Singh, Spritz and Geyer, 1971) for this reason, but little attention has been paid to other aspects of their aminergic transmitters metabolism. During the course of our work, Tillement, Debarle, Simon and Boissier (1970) reported on the transmitter levels in Quaking mice. The reasons for thinking that the monoamine metabolism of these mice might be altered are as follows. The trembling might be associated with a change in the activity and therefore metabolism of dopaminergic structures. Chronic stress due to permanent tremor might induce changes in norepinephrine metabolism. Since there are changes in the sleep patterns of Quaking mice (Valatx and Jouvet, 1971), there might be changes in brain serotonin metabolism. This study of the turnover of norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin in the whole brains of control and Quaking mice is the preliminary to detailed examination of the turnover of the transmitters in well-defined brain regions.

Notizen: Summary 1. All enzymes tested: malate dehydrogenase (MDH), glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PDH), and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6-P-GDH)_behaved rhythmically during a period of continuous white light interrupted by darkness. All showed approximately the same frequency of 12–15 h. 2. The enzymes of the tricarboxylic-acid cycle (MDH and GDH) are in phase with each other but are out of phase with those of the oxidative pentose-phosphate pathway (G-6-PDH and 6-P-GDH) which are in turn in phase with each other. 3. GDH appears to be activated by the addition of Hoagland's solution which leads to an overt rhythm 24 h prior to darkness. The rhythms of MDH, G-6-PDH and 6-P-GDH cannot be demonstrated prior to the onset of darkness due to an inhibition of the MDH and pentose-phosphate cycle enzymes by light. 4. The control of the frequency and phase of these rhythms are discussed in relation to a positive correlation of the rhythms in enzyme activity presented here and the rhythms of the pyridine nucleotides presented elsewhere.

Notizen: Summary In order to clarify the aerodynamic function of the alula spuria, the following observations were made on the wings of four avian species: (1) differential measurements of the aerodynamic force components produced by the wing with the alula spread away from or laid against the rest of the wing, (2) smoke-tunnel measurements of the air flow around the wing under the same conditions of alula position, (3) confirmation by high-frequency photography of the large angles of attack used by birds in stopping their flight. From the agreement among the results it follows that, at very high angles of attack (30°〈α〈50°), the abducted alulae function as producers of high lift (maximal increase in lift 25%) and exactly in this range of α impede the breaking away of the air stream from the upper surface of the wing. Additional functional possibilities are discussed, as well as technical analogues of this biological mechanism.

Notizen: Abstract This paper deals with the bionomy of the sea bottoms of the N-NE Brazilian continental shelf, between Cape Orange and the State of Sergipe, south of São. Francisco River. It is based on data collected by the Instituto Oceanográfico, Recife, Brazil, during several surveys conducted in that area. Special emphasis is placed on the characteristics of the bottom, chiefly surveyed by means of dredging, as well as on the biological populations living on the different substrata. The sector of Recife, investigated in more detail, provides a general scheme of population delimitation. The study is applicable to the rest of the N-NE Brazilian region. The great extent of the mud or muddy sand bottoms gives the Amazonian coasts a very typical aspect. The rest of the area is remarkable for the predominance of calcareous algae of the Melobesiae group. Some biogeographical considerations are presented regarding the northern and southern limits of the NE Brazilian region. Finally, it is attempted to define the bionomical significance of the bottoms studied, comparing them with similar and better knwon biotopes from the Mediterranean Sea and SW Indian Ocean.
