Summary The load-deformation diagrams measured on PMMA sheets with the biaxial penetration test show 3 significant regions: In the first region, where the deformationw 0 is smaller than the thickness of the specimen, the load is predominated by bending-forces; in the second region we have to add a term proportional to the 3rd power of the deformationw 0, resulting from the straining of the specimen. In the third region we observe yielding of the specimen, with load again proportional to deformation. From the diagrams can be read the breaking loadK s, the breaking deformationl s and the breaking energyA s. These data correspond to the tensile strength, the elongation at rupture and the impact strength in the monoaxial experiment, but they cannot be calculated directly from these results. For example we found, that for PMMA with increasing temperatureK s increases, while the tensile strength and the flexural strength decrease. These differences are discussed in this paper. The preparation of the specimens for the penetration test is easier than for the monoaxial tensile test; furthermore only original surfaces are deformed in that test. The biaxial deformation in the penetration test corresponds widely to the deformation which plastic sheets undergo in practical application.
Notes:
