Abstract The effects of intraventricular injections of 6-Hydroxydopamine (OHDA), Dopamine (DA) and dl-Norepinephrine (NE) were examined in rats. Daily treatments of OHDA (400 Μg) suppressed self-stimulation, eating and drinking and produced hyper-responsivness to handling and synchronization of cortical EEG during periods of non-movement when tests were made 23–24 h following daily treatments. DA (1000 Μg) inhibited only eating while NE (400 Μg) treated animals were similar to animals receiving only control injections. On tests made in the first 5 h following treatment NE and DA produced hypothermia, inhibition of grooming, synchrony of cortical EEG and suppression of the amplitude of hippocampal EEG each with a similar time course. Following OHDA treatment on the first day hypothermia and inhibition of grooming occurred but these changes were not observed following subsequent treatments.
