    Notes: In ten hospitalized chronic schizophrenics receiving large doses of chlorpromazine and orphenadrine, the total serum tryptophan was approx. 50 per cent of normal. However, the level of diffusible tryptophan (that fraction directly available for uptake into the brain and other tissues) did not suffer so great a reduction, because the number of sites available for tryptophan binding per mole of serum albumin was only half that normally found, although the apparent affinity of the albumin for tryptophan was approximately normal. There was thus a considerable difference in the ratio of diffusible/bound serum tryptophan between the normal and schizophrenic subjects. Reduced serum albumin and elevated serum non-esterified fatty acid levels in the schizophrenics do not appear to account for the abnormality of binding. In vitro and animal experiments with the two drugs chlorpromazine and orphenadrine suggested that the effects observed were not due to the drugs per se.

    Notes: —DOPA and 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) are generally supposed to be decarboxylated in mammalian tissues by a single enzyme, the two activities being present in constant ratio through a variety of purification procedures. It has now been shown that the ratio of activity of the liver enzyme towards the two substrates can be altered by mild treatments, such as might be used in solubilization of brain preparations. DOPA decarboxylase activity was preferentially inactivated by sodium dodecyl sulphate treatment, and 5-HTP decarboxylation by urea.Previous reports that the two substrates show different pH optima but are mutually competitive, have been confirmed. The Km of the enzyme towards 5-HTP was lowest at pH 7.8 (the optimum pH for decarboxylation of this amino acid), but the variation with pH of the Km towards DOPA was unrelated to the pH optimum for decarboxylation. There appeared to be no relation between the probable ionization state of the substrates and the pH dependence of the enzyme. Studies on the binding characteristics of the enzyme for the two products, dopamine and serotonin, did not show any specific saturable binding.It is proposed that the enzyme has a complex active site, with separate affinity sites for the two substrates, adjacent to a single catalytic site.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die magnetische Suszeptibilität des Chroms und der binären, kubisch raumzentrierten Legierungen Cr-Re, Cr-Ru, Cr-Os, Cr-Mo und Cr-W wurden im Temperaturbereich 4,2°〈T〈700°K untersucht. Die antiferromagnetische Ordnung dieser Legierungen äußert sich in einer Verringerung der Spinsuszeptibilität. Durch Vergleich mit dem an den gleichen Proben gemessenen Koeffizienten der Elektronenwärme konnten die einzelnen Suszeptibilitätsanteile und der Einfluß von Elektron-Wechselwirkungen abgeschätzt werden.
    Abstract: Résumé La susceptibilité magnétique du chrome et des alliages binaires Cr-Re, Cr-Ru, Cr-Os, Cr-Mo et Cr-W, de structure cubique centrée, a été mesurée entre 4,2°K et 700°K. L’ordre antiferromagnétique de ces alliages entraîne une diminution de la susceptibilité de spin. Par la comparaison des résultats avec la chaleur spécifique électronique, mesurée dans les mêmes échantillons, les différentes contributions à la susceptibilité ainsi que l’influence des interactions électroniques ont pu être estimées.
    Notes: Abstract The magnetic susceptibility of chromium and b.c.c. binary alloys of Cr-Re, Cr-Ru, Cr-Os, Cr-Mo and Cr-W has been measured in the temperature range of 4,2°K to 700°K. These alloys exhibit a reduced spin susceptibility in the antiferromagnetic state. The comparison of the results with the electronic specific heat of the same samples yields an estimate of the different contributions to the susceptibility and of the influence of electron interactions.

    Notes: Two-phase solids-in-air flow was experimentally studied in a once through flexible wall tube flow system using nominal 25μm and 50μm spherical glass beads. For turbulent flow through the Silastic tube without a damping medium behind the wall, cases of true drag reduction and no drag reduction were found. The rate of addition of the glass beads was seen to be a correlatable parameter for both the flexible and rigid wall systems. A mechanistic model is proposed for interpretation of the results. It was qualitatively observed that the presence of an electrostatic charge on the particles at low relative humidities had a pronounced effect on increasing the drag in the system.
