Notes: Summary Central nerve fibres of Pacinian corpuscles of the cat were examined by semiserial sections 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 9 days after sciatic nerve cut. Axons of the Pacinian corpuscles showed degenerative changes 4 days after transsection and the removal of axonal and myelin debris was almost completed within 9 days. Axonal degeneration was characterized by disintegration of filaments and tubules, disruption of axolemma, swelling of mitochondria and loss of filopod processes in the terminal axon. Selective preservation of filaments in local areas of terminal axons was found in some corpuscles. The myelinated portions of the nerve fibre were removed by Schwann cells and the unmyelinated terminal portions by inner core lamellar cells. Mitochondria and other degenerated axoplasmic organelles of the terminal axon formed dense bodies following their engulfment by lamellar cells. The unmyelinated portion of the axon was removed faster than the myelinated. The rate of removal of axonal debris varied along the length of both the unmyelinated and myelinated portions of the nerve fibre. Similarity in the behaviour and morphology of reactive lamellar and Schwann cells points to the possibility of the common derivation of these cells.

Notes: Summary The occurrence of glial cells surrounded by myelin sheaths was investigated in cat and monkey optic nerves undergoing Wallerian degeneration. Occasionally, collapsed myelin sheaths were closely apposed to oligodendroglia. More often, small glial cells and their processes were completely surrounded by a myelin sheath. On the basis of ultrastructural appearance the cells were identified as being of three different types. One type had ‘light’ cytoplasmic processes and was comparable to astroglia. The cytoplasm of another type, with a dark granular cytoplasm and sparse rough endoplasmic reticulum, had characteristics of cells previously considered to be microglia, multipotential glia, ‘M’ cells or dark oligodendroglia. The third cell type contained numerous rosettes of ribosomes and an extensive rough endoplasmic reticulum, somewhat similar to cells previously described as medium oligodendroglia. The second and third cell types were considered to be oligodendroglia and the existence of a third glial element is questioned. Except in the later stages of degeneration (56 days and longer) the periodicity of the myelin remained normal. Evidence is presented to show that glial cells or their processes enter the myelin sheath at the node of Ranvier. It is suggested that the invading oligodendroglia are part of a population of ‘dormant’ cells.

Notes: Edge displacement of assumed-stress hybrid plate elements are commonly chosen as either linear, quadratic or cubic functions of the edge co-ordinate. The present paper examines the effect of this choice on the acceptability, accuracy, and possible zero energy modes of elements based on a linear stress field. It is concluded that triangular elements may be preferable to quadrilaterals, and that linear edge displacements are not desirable.

Notes: Two general quadrilateral elements for plate bending are developed. Each has 12 degrees of freedom and accounts for transverse shear deformation effects. Each is built from four triangular elements whose properties are derived by the assumed-stress hybrid approach. Matrices needed to generate the stiffness properties of the triangular elements are explicitly stated so as to facilitate their use. Numerical test cases, in which shear deformation effects range from negligible to very important, are used to illustrate the behaviour of the elements. It is concluded that the simpler of the two quadrilaterals is one of the best plate elements currently available.

Notes: The subject of this paper is the eight-node shell element of Reference 1. The following options in element formulation are discussed: an alternate form of co-ordinate transformation between global and shell co-ordinates, use of stiffness coefficients for sandwich construction and inclusion of internal degrees of freedom. Numerical examples show the effects of adding internal freedoms, and serve to compare stresses calculated directly at element nodes with those obtained by extrapolation from values at the Gauss points.
