Notes: Summary This paper discusses the disturbance produced in an infinite layer of non-homogeneous elastic material characterised by ϱ=ϱ0 γn and μ=μ0γn(n〉0) where ϱ and μ are the density and shear modulus respectively of the material, due to periodic torsional force applied on the wall of a cylindrical hole in the layer. The variation of the displacement component with the radius vector is shown graphically and compared with the corresponding homogeneous case.

Notes: Summary We have discussed in the paper the disturbance produced in an infinite layer of nonhomogeneous elastic material characterised by ϱ = ϱ0 Z and μ = μ0 Z where ϱ and μ are the density and shear modulus respectively of the material due to periodic torsional force applied on the wall of a cylindrical hole in the layer. The variation of the displacement component with the depth of the layer is shown graphically and compared with the corresponding homogeneous case.

Notes: Summary In the present paper, the wave propagation from a cylindrical cavity in an infinite medium exhibiting couple-stress is considered. The variations of Hoop-stress on the cavity surface are investigated for different couple-stress material moduli and wave lengths. Significant differences are found when compared with those based on classical theory of elasticity.

Notes: Summary Linear couple stress theory has been applied to investigate the stress distribution in a half plane due to a moving line load on the surface. It is assumed that the load is moving slower than both the longitudinal and transverse wave speeds of the elastic media (subsonic case). It is found that the couple stress effect depends on the speed of the moving load, the couple-stress parameter, and thePoisson's ratio.

Notes: Abstract Using the recent experimental results of various authors the dependence of the knock-on electron cross-section on primary muon energy has been studied in detail. It is found that the knock-on production cross-section increases with primary muon energy upto at least 32 GeV in accordance with Bhabha's theory for energy transfers greater than 15 MeV.

Notes: Abstract Intervalley population transfer as a function of electric field has been investigated in a simple way assuming a Davydov type distribution. It has been shown that the current-voltage characteristics contain a region of negative differential conductivity and the threshold field is ∼3·5 kV/cm.

Notes: Abstract In this paper the Friedmann universes containing(i) a massless real scalar field,(ii) a massive real scalar field,(iii) electromagnetic fields,(iv) the combined massive complex scalar and electromagnetic fields are investigated. In(i) the field has to be either purely spatial or else purely temporal and the latter case is completely solved. Similarly in(ii) the purely time-dependent case has been reduced to a single fourth order ordinary differential equation. In this case graphs of the numerical solutions have been exhibited. In(iii) as expected, no non-trivial solution exists. In(iv) all possible cases are studied. In case the complex wave function is a product of two non-constant functions, i.e. ψ=ξ(r)τ(t), there exists no solution. In the subcase gx(r)=ξ*(r)=constant, ¦τ(t)¦=constant the problem is completely solved. In the subcase ξ(r)=ξ*(r)=constant and ¦τ(t)¦ is non-constant, the system of equations boil down to the same fourth order ordinary differential equation as mentioned before. In the last two sub-cases, the time-dependent wave field carries electric charge density which, strangely enough, is decoupled from the electromagnetic fields.

Notes: Abstract We present simple methods by which certain solutions of the Einstein vacuum equation (and some other equations) can be used to generate further solutions of these equations. In some cases the new solutions admit a smaller number of metric automorphisms than the original ones and are, in this sense, more general.

Notes: Summary In this paper, we have analysed the transient plane thermal stress problem of a circular disc of orthotropic material with instantaneous point heat source. The variation of σθθ with time along different radius vectors is exhibited graphically and compared with that of the isotropic case.
