Notes: Summary Plasma of normal and anaemic rats was labelled with59FeCl3 and incubated with packed reticulocytes. The rate of plasma clearance of59Fe was significantly accelerated compared to that of cold iron. In further experiments varying amounts of labelled and unlabelled plasma were mixed to give identical final volumes,59Fe-,56Fe- and transferrin-concentrations. The amount of radioactivity taken up by cells diminished with decreasing numbers of di-59Fe-transferrin molecules, present in the system. Both findings point to the functional heterogeneity of the plasma iron pool.

Notes: Abstract— Mice were injected intracerebrally with radioactive leucine 30 min before decapitation. A double-label technique was used; e.g. [3H]leucine in control, untreated mice and [14C]leucine in morphine-tolerant (dependent) mice. Proteins were extracted sequentially from mouse brain with aqueous buffer, Triton X-100, and sodium lauryl sulphate. Each extract was subjected to electrophoresis on discontinuous, porosity-gradient acrylamide gels. When the protein patterns from untreated, acutely morphinized mice were compared with those from morphine-tolerant (dependent) mice, we observed no differences in the amounts of protein or of radioactivity in any of the 55 discrete bands.

Notes: The optimal startup policy of a jacketed tubular reactor, in which a first-order, reversible, exothermic reaction takes place, is presented. A distributed maximum principle is presented for determining weak necessary conditions for optimality of a diffusional distributed parameter system. A numerical technique is developed for practical implementation of the distributed maximum principle. This involves the sequential solution of the state and adjoint equations, in conjunction with a functional gradient technique for iteratively improving the control function.
