    Notes: Abstract— Amino acids may be involved in primary afferent excitatory neurotransmission in the spinal cord. To test this possibility the effect of chronic dorsal root section on amino acid levels of the rabbit spinal cord has been investigated. Dorsal roots L6-S2 were sectioned under anaesthesia. Control animals were subjected to similar surgical procedures but the dorsal roots were left intact. Electromyogram recordings taken 6 days after surgery confirmed the absence of sensory input to the lower lumbosacral cord of dorsal root sectioned animals although motor function was retained. In contrast to this control animals exhibited normal reflex activity. The spinal cord was removed from each animal and extracted in trichloracetic acid for subsequent analysts of amino acids on an autoanalyser. Sections of cord were retained for histological determination of neuronal degeneration. Comparison of amino acid levels in dorsal root sectioned and control animals revealed that the only excitatory amino acid to be significantly reduced by dorsal root section wasaspartic acid (–50 percent X although glutamic acid was also reduced (– 30 per cent). Two inhibitory amino acids, cystathionine and GABA, were also significantly depleted (– 50 and - 35 per cent). The possible involvement of these amino acids in spinal cord neurotransmission is discussed.

    Notes: The human fetus of 38 to 41 weeks' gestation has a whole blood 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) concentration equivalent to the adult. It is suggested that the fetus in utero is capable of producing 5-HT in sufficient amounts to account for the documented rise in placental 5-HT concentration found in late pregnancy.

    Notes: Abstract The glycosaminoglycans of root dentine from permanent human teeth were studied. The tissue was digested with papain and the glycosaminoglycans were precipitated with cetylpyridinium chloride and recovered by centrifugation. A small quantity of keratan sulphate was recovered from the supernatant after fractionation on cetylpyridinium chloride and Ecteola-cellulose. The cetylpyridinium chloride-precipitated glycosaminoglycans were studied by infra-red spectrophotometry, cetylpyridinium chloride cellulose chromatography and electrophoresis on cellulose acetate. Individual hexosamines were determined on an autoanalyzer. The results indicate that chondroitin-4-sulphate is the major glycosaminoglycan and that chondroitin-6-sulphate, hyaluronic acid, dermatan sulphate and a nonsulphated galactosaminoglycan are also present in minor quantities.

    Notes: Abstract Characteristic jagged marks on moiré interference photographs using diffraction gratings show clearly the growth of a yielding region in a mild-steel test specimen under plane-stress conditions. With more accurate measurements, analysis of the displacement contours in the elastic region and extrapolation to the elastic-plastic boundary should provide much needed experimental data for the theory of elasto-plasticity of metals.
