Notes: Summary Examination of sectioned cells fixed in KMnO4 has shown that the wall of the first bud of a cell of Saccharomycodes ludwigii arises as an extension of the main wall of the parent, while in subsequent buds it develops by extension of the half-septum remaining at a previous detachment scar. Septa are formed by the deposition of wall material on each side of an electron transparent plate which develops centripetally. Structural changes occur in the marginal region of the septum prior to rupture of the main wall and the separation of cells at the surface of the septum-plate. The broken walls remain as annular rings around the scars following the successive development of buds at both apices of the cell. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae the bud wall arises as a direct extension of the parent wall or as an extension of an additional inner layer developed locally. The two types of bud origin are compared in the two yeasts and a comparison is also made with the development of buds, fission cells, conidia and germ tubes in other organisms.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A case of solitary cranial plasmacytoma is described and a short review is provided concerning comparable cases in the literature. In the author's opinion the absence of pathological x-ray and laboratory findings does not suffice over a long period of time to prove the existence of a true solitary plasmacytoma. The authors have considered the possibility of using isotope diagnosis in addition. Furthermore abdominal plasmacytoma must be excluded. In the author's opinion the diagnosis of a true solitary plasmacytoma depends first and foremost, on a follow-up of at least 5 years without any signs of the development of a new focus or of biochemical changes. The prognosis of the monostotic form of plasmacytoma of the skull is favourable after extirpation and/or radiation therapy.

Notes: The role of dermal blood vessels in the histopathogenesis of malignant atrophic papulosis has been investigated in two patients using enzyme histochemical, tissue fibrinolysis and electron-microscopic techniques. In the earliest papules the normal enzymatic reactions of the endothelium and fibrinolytic activity of affected blood vessels were markedly impaired or absent. The endothelial cells were swollen and showed minor degenerative changes, but no cytoplasmic inclusions suggestive of virus particles could be detected. The results of intradermal skin tests and lymphocyte transformation cultures did not suggest the presence of any immunological defect. It is suggested that the skin lesions of malignant atrophic papulosis could be secondary to the slow occlusion of deeper arterioles.

Notes: Summary.— The clinical and histopathological features of 15 cases with “lymphomatoid” pityriasis lichenoides are described. The eruption was characterized by the continuous formation of papules which involuted spontaneously to leave scars. The papules closely resembled those found in typical pityriasis lichenoides acuta or chronica, but in some cases larger ulceronecrotic lesions also occurred. The disease had often persisted for many years without evidence of systemic involvement. In 1 male, however, the outcome was fatal after an interval of 16 years. The spectrum of histopathological findings varied considerably from a benign-looking infiltrate, usually in the smaller papules, to those which suggested a highly malignant infiltrate because of the presence of numerous large atypical cells. Preliminary histochemical investigations suggest that the large cells are derived from histiocytes and are distinct from leukaemic blast cells or Hodgkin's giant cells.

Notes: Summary.— Biopsies from 10 patients with lichen amyloidosus were investigated histochemically with special reference to the epidermal changes. The number of dopa-positive melanocytes was markedly decreased in the epidermis overlying the amyloid deposits, indicating that melanocytes are also involved and probably destroyed by the disease process. No increase in lysosomal enzyme activity could be detected in epidermal cells undergoing degeneration or in the epidermis immediately above the amyloid deposits. Respiratory enzyme activity was moderately reduced in the epidermis overlying the amyloid deposits. These histochcmical findings confirm that the epidermis is likely to be involved in the histopathogenesis of lichen amyloidosus. It is suggested that, prior to the deposition of amyloid, a specific cellular tolerance may develop to the presence of necrotic epidermal cells in the region of the dermo-epidermal junction.
