Notes: Summary The types and levels of pesticide residues in soil samples from five west Alabama counties were determined. Soil samples were taken randomly from preselected sites in each county and were analyzed by gas chromatography. Pesticide residues were found in all samples examined, even soil samples from areas where records indicated that no pesticides had been applied directly. The most prevalent chlorinated hydrocarbons were benzene hexachloride and aldrin while the most abundant organophosphate was malathion.

Notes: The levels of the S-100 and 14-3-2 proteins were determined in a number of regions of mouse brain at intervals from 1 day to 30 months of age. Both S-100 and 14-3-2 were found in measurable amounts as early as the first day of postnatal age but did not begin to accumulate rapidly in the forebrain, brain stem and cerebellum of the mouse brain until some time between the 7th and 14th days. From days 14 to 28 the levels of S-100 and 14-3-2 in each region continued to increase rapidly with the exception of the forebrain where the rate of accumulation of S-100 appeared to lag considerably behind that in the other regions. The proteins continued to accumulate at a rapid rate until approximately 6 months of age. From 6 to 30 months of age, the levels of 14-3-2 remained relatively stable in cerebellum, hippocampus and hypothalamus and appeared to decrease slightly in striatum and cerebral cortex. In the case of S-100, the level of the protein increased in all regions of brain from 6 to 30 months but the increase was most pronounced in the hippocampus, hypothalamus and striatum. The principal conclusion derived from this study is that the biochemical development and aging of the central nervous system are regionally selective processes.

Notes: Abstract— The S-100 and 14-3-2 proteins, which are found only in nervous tissues, were measured in degenerating rabbit optic nerve at 0, 5 10, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 150 and 200 days after unilateral enucleation in order to obtain indications of the cellular localization of these proteins in the central nervous system. S-100 increased and 14-3-2 decreased (both approximately 70 per cent) in cut nerves by 200 days of degeneration. Changes in amounts of the proteins were related to cellular alterations which characterize the degenerative process, as demonstrated by electron microscopy. In uncut nerves (intact eye) from these experimental animals, S-100 increased and 14-3-2 decreased slightly at 5 days, after which time the levels of each returned to those approximating the content in corresponding nerves from unoperated control animals. No appreciable change in total soluble proteins was measured in degenerating or intact nerves. Since S-100 increased and 14-3-2 decreased in the degenerating optic nerve as it became relatively enriched in glial constituents but impoverished in axonal content, it is suggested that S-100 is primarily a glial protein and 14-3-2 predominantly a neuronal protein in the central nervous system.

Notes: Abstract The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) requires that microorganisms which could contaminate the surface of the moon as the result of lunar missions be enumerated and identified so that life forms in lunar materials returned to earth may be more easily recognized as being of native or terrestrial origin. Assessment of microbial contamination in the intramural environments used for the assembly and test of the manned lunar spacecraft (Apollo) was made using fallout strips and air samplers. Microbial contamination on the surfaces of Apollo Command and Lunar Modules was determined by use of the swab-rinse method. Preliminary results indicate that the levels of microbial contamination which accumulated on exposed stainless steel surfaces, as well as airborne microbial contamination in the high bay assembly areas, were similar to those encountered in the unmanned spacecraft assembly areas. However, higher levels of microbial contamination were detected on the Apollo spacecraft than on the unmanned lunar spacecraft.

Notes: Three series of neuroblastoma X fibroblast hybrid clones were isolated from crosses between mouse or human fibroblasts and mouse or human neuroblastoma cell lines by virus-mediated cell fusion. The expression of 14-3-2 protein (an acidic protein specific to neurons) and steroid sulfatase activity was studied in parental and hybrid cell lines. Steroid sulfatase was extinguished in hybrids when only one parent expressed the enzyme, but was expressed in one hybrid combination in which both parents expressed the enzyme. The neuron-specific 14-3-2 protein, on the other hand, continued to be expressed in all three series of neuroblastoma x fibroblast hybrids. In most cases where these pheno-types were expressed, they also exhibited temporal modulation; that is, specific activity is low during logarithmic growth and increases markedly during stationary phase. The glial-specific protein S-100 is absent from all parents and hybrids. The results are discussed in terms of mechanisms of regulation of differentiated phenotypes in mammalian cells.

Notes: An investigation was conducted to determine the general physical characteristics of self-curing acrylic resin systems in terms of their potential utilization in total hip arthroplasty.Exothermic temperature, working and setting times were monitored with thermocouples placed in acrylic masses insulated via a Teflon mold. Mechanical strengths were run in an Instron testing machine. The same trends were noted in all systems studied. As thickness or mass increased, the maximum temperature and the setting time increased. As the powder to liquid ratio increased (thereby relatively less liquid), the maximum temperature, set times and dough times decreased, while the working time was essentially unaffected. As the ambient temperature decreased, the maximum temperature decreased while the dough, working and setting times increased. The mechanical strengths of the systems cured at one atmosphere are low compared to high temperature and pressure curing. Flowability of the materials decreases quickly as final set time is approached.Although trends are similar in many self-curing acylic systems minors shifts in complex proprietary compositions can produce a wide span or working and setting times. Because the surgical team controls such parameters as the mass employed, the amount of liquid introduced, and the ambient temperature it is important that they continuously re-evaluate their handling procedures particularly if new acrylic cements would be introduced.
