Notes: Abstract A critical analysis of the puffing activity and transcribing activity patterns of different sites of the X-chromosome of the male and female larval salivary glands of Drosophila hydei has been presented. The results show that within the limitations of the resolving power of the technique and variability inherent in the general chromosomal conditions the puffing activities of the different sites of the X-chromosome are very much alike in the two sexes. Of the 15 puffing sites in the X-chromosome, most of the sites either show good concordance in the two sexes or resemble in their highest class value. Only 4 sites (4CD, 8A, 16C and 20B) show considerable discordance in the activity pattern between male and female. Incorporation of 3H-uridine in the X-chromosome also reveals that there is indeed a reasonable degree of superimposition of the number of silver grains in the X-chromosomal puffs of the two sexes. Whatever disparity that exists between the grain numbers in the two sexes can be explained on the basis of sister-class compensation. These results have been interpreted as evidence in support of the piece-meal mechanism of dosage compensation in Drosophila, operating through hyperactivation in the male.

Notes: Abstract Alkaline sodium silicates have been prepared by heating sodium carbonate and silica mixtures in the mole ratio of 2.5∶1. The silicates have been examined by chronopotentiometric and thermogravimetric methods. The electro-analytical technique has allowed the identification of the oxy-anions SiO4 4−, Si2O7 6− and Si3O10 8− by their electro-reduction at cathodic potentials with reference to a graphite anode of approximately −1.0, −1.6, −2.0 V respectively.

Notes: Abstract The basitarsal bristle pattern of the mutants sx (sexcombless), tra (transformer), and dsx (doublesex), and of the combinations sx-dsx and tra-dsx is described. Epistasis of dsx over both sx and tra for many of the chaetotaxal characteristics was found. The various effects of interaction observed, in individuals of male as well as female chromosomal constitution, are discussed in the light of the levels of action of the mutant genes in modifying the development of sex. It is suggested that intersexes induced by dsx are a class by itself, and that the action of dsx might be at a primary level of sex determination.

Notes: Abstract The dependence of RMS acoustic-emission output on strain rate was determined during tensile tests on 7075-T6 aluminum over a range of strain rates from 0.015 min−1 to 0.230 min−1. A special normalization technique was developed to eliminate the inherent differences in the acoustic emission from supposedly identical specimens tested under identical conditions. It was found that the RMS acoustic-emission output increases approximately linearly with strain rate, and that the slope of the linear dependence decreased with increased plastic strain. The effect of pinned dislocation breakaway on the acoustic-emission output vs. plastic-strain relationship is the subject of a preliminary theory.
