Notes: Abstract In this paper, the problem of the developing turbulent flow in concentric annuli is studied from an integral view-point based on a modified model ofReichardt's expression for the eddy diffusivity of momentum. The analytical results are compared with the experimental data based on the measurement of local flow conditions for air flow through four concentric annuli for a Reynolds number range of about 20,000 to 110,000. In the analysis, it was assumed that the flow is turbulent everywhere and in the experimental work, the flow was tripped at the starting position of the boundary layers.

Notes: Summary Mitochondria isolated from potato tubers were placed in solutions containing various alcohols, aldoses, or neutral amino acids. Based on the osmotic responses in the different media, the reflection coefficients and hence the relative permeabilities of the nonelectrolytes could be determined. The reflection coefficients (σ j 'S) of the potato tuber mitochondria for alcohols became progressively larger as hydroxymethyl groups were added to the molecule, viz. methanol (σ j =0.07), ethylene glycol (0.25), glycerol (0.44),meso-erythritol (0.71) and adonitol (0.98). This increase in σ j (decrease in permeativity) with increasing chain length parallels the decreasing lipid-water partition coefficients of the solutes. The reflection coefficients ofd-sorbitol (1.02) and ofd-mannitol (0.99) indicate that these six-carbon polyhydroxy alcohols are relatively impermeant and hence they would be suitable osmotica in which to suspend mitochondria. The σ j 'S varied from 0.96 to 1.02 forD-ribose,D-xylose,D-lyxose,D-arabinose, α-D-glucose, β-D-glucose,D-galactose,D-mannose, glycine,L-alanine,L-threonine,L-phenylalanine,L-methionine andL-cysteine, indicating that these sugars and amino acids do not readily diffuse across the pair of membranes surrounding potato mitochondria. By contrast, the σ j 'S of liver mitochondria for glycine and of pea chloroplasts for most of the same aldopentoses and amino acids are close to zero. Thus, different organelles can vary widely in their permeability properties for nonelectrolytes.

Notes: Abstract Eight male adult schizophrenic patients undergoing chronic treatment with chlorpromazine were investigated. Clinical assessments were made weekly by a psychiatrist who was unaware of the biochemical findings. Blood samples were drawn 3 h after the first daily dose and the plasma concentrations of chlorpromazine and 11 of its metabolites were assessed by a direct scan technique employing quantitative thin layer chromatography. Patients that responded well to treatment had high plasma levels of chlorpromazine and 7-hydroxychlorpromazine; whereas non-responders had high plasma levels of chlorpromazine sulphoxide. These preliminary findings support the hypothesis that chlorpromazine metabolites play an important role in determining clinical response to treatment, which arose from the failure of previous investigators to show a statistically significant relationship between plasma levels of the parent compound and clinical response.

Notes: Summary Osmotic responses of chloroplasts from chilling-resistant (Pisum sativum L., Spinacia oleracea L.) and chilling-sensitive (Phaseolus vulgaris L., Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) plants to glycerol and erythritol were determined from 1° to 28°. The permeability of the chloroplast limiting membranes, as measured by reflection coefficients, decreased when the temperature was raised. For Pisum and Spinacia the curves relating reflection coefficients and temperature were smooth, while for Phaseolus and Lycopersicon breaks occurred near 11°. The break may indicate a phase transition in the membranes, the change leading to a higher chloroplast permeability at lower temperatures for chilling-sensitive plants.
