Notes: Summary The paper treats optimal design of a plane elastic truss (Fig. 1) subject to two alternative loads L′ and L″, when an upper bound is given for the absolute value of the stress in any bar. While the load L′ is fixed, the load L″ is varied subject to the restriction to nonnegative values of P and Q (Fig. 1). The possibility that the optimal truss, that is the truss with the smallest total volume of bars, is statically determinate is not excluded. Statically indeterminate trusses, and particularly fully stressed trusses of this kind are found to play a less important role than has generally been believed.

Notes: Abstract A global optimality condition is established for minimum-weight design of sandwich beams with elementwise constant cross section for prescribed compliances in alternative states of loading. This condition requires a nonnegative linear combination of the mean-square curvatures of an element in the considered states of loading to have the same value for all elements. The use of the condition in the determination of the minimum-weight design is illustrated by examples.

Notes: Abstract Gomory and Hu (Ref. 1) formulated the optimal allocation of capacities to the links of a communication networks as a problem in linear programming. The application of this formulation to the solution of problems of realistic size does, however, require an excessive amount of computation. In the present paper, a slightly different formulation is given. The resulting optimality conditions readily lend themselves to the construction of problems with known optimal solutions, thereby providing suitable examples for the assessment of the efficiencies of approximate methods. An approximate method that has been found highly efficient in many cases is illustrated by an example.

Notes: Abstract Typical problems of optimal structural design are discussed to indicate mathematical techniques used in this field. An introductory example (Section 2) concerns the design of a beam for prescribed maximal deflection and shows how suitable discretization may lead to a problem of nonlinear programming, in this case, convex programming. The problem of optimal layout of a truss (Section 3) is discussed at some length. A new method of establishing optimality criteria (Section 4) is illustrated by the optimal design of a statically indeterminate beam of segmentwise constant or continuously varying cross section for given deflection under a single concentrated load. Other applications of this method (Section 5) are briefly discussed, and a simple example of multipurpose design (Section 6) concludes the paper.

Notes: Abstract Minimum-weight design of axially-symmetric, rotating, elastic disks is usually discussed in terms of uniform strength. In this paper, an alternative constraint is used: under the combined influence of centrifugal forces and a uniform radial traction along the circular edge, the radial displacement at this edge is to have a prescribed value. A necessary and sufficient optimality condition is derived, and its use in the determination of optimal disk profiles is illustrated by examples. It is shown that the resulting disks are far from satisfying the condition of uniform strength although their weights are only very slightly smaller than those of the corresponding disks of uniform strength.
