Abstract Gastric hydrochloric acid output and serum gastrin concentrations were compared to determine whether there was any correlation between circulating serum gastrin levels and acid output in the fasting, interdigestive state of the dog, miniature pig and monkey (Macaca mulatta). No correlation was seen in any species except in the anesthetized, vagotomized dog. In the monkey and miniature pig, interdigestive secretion is predominantly controlled by direct vagal stimulation of the parietal cell. Conversely, in the anesthetized, vagotomized dog, acid secretion may be primarily under gastrin control.
