Notes: Summary Laws of excitability, activity and interactivity were established in their basic forms concerning not only the slope and time factors of an effective stimulus to a physiological system, but also concerning relative differences in the stimulus, moving stimulus, reciprocal inhibition, etc., and further the basis was established for the unification of these laws in the above various situations.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Concerning the question of the influence of cellular proliferation in the development of tumours, both a standard brain injury and also resorptive carcinogens with a neurotropic effect have been used in rats. The “model” of the transplacental carcinogenesis was employed. The resultant tumours corresponded, both in respect of their localization and in their morphology, almost exactly to the usual picture seen in this method of investigation but without employing trauma. The only unusual feature was the development of almost pure astrocytomata, with are otherwise very rare. Trauma evidently did not influence the location of the tumours.

Notes: Summary Serial passage of bovine ephemeral fever virus in hamster lung cells, HmLu-1, deprived rapidly the virus of virulence for cattle with simultaneous loss of the ability to produce neutralizing antibody. The attenuated virus thus obtained, however, could prime cattle to produce neutralizing antibody rapidly to high titers following a subsequent inoculation of formalin-inactivated, AIPO4 gel-adsorbed vaccine (K). Although one subcutaneous dose of live vaccine (L) prepared from the attenuated virus produces no detectable amounts of neutralizing antibody unless as heavy a dose as 107 TCID50 was used, the priming effect of L vaccine was shown even with 10 TCLD50. Similar priming effect was also shown in mice by intracerebral inoculation of L vaccine. Maximal antibody response of cattle was obtained by one subcutaneous L vaccine dose of ≥ lO5]TCID50 followed by 3 ml of K vaccine administered intramuscularly at intervals of 2 to 4 weeks. This LK method induced seroconversion in nearly all of initially seronegative cattle, and the neutralizing antibody thus produced persisted much longer than that following two doses of K vaccine given at one-month intervals. The LK method exerted little side effects in cattle. Cows vaccinated during pregnancy delivered healthy calves in term. No adverse effect on milk production was shown. The vaccine virus could not be passaged serially in calves by intravenous inoculation of the blood. Lyophilized L vaccine was stored at 4

Notes: Summary An inactivated vaccine prepared from virus grown in hamster lung cells produced specific neutralizing antibody by intramuscular inoculation in cattle as well as in mice. Antibody response of cattle after one dose of vaccine was poor both in antibody level and seroconversion rate. However, a second dose given at intervals of 3 or more weeks induced a rapid and high-titered antibody formation in almost all animals. The antibody levels thus attained declined rather rapidly in several months, yet a booster dose given one year later provoked a rapid antibody response. Considering this pattern of antibody response together with the seasonal incidence of the disease it seems adequate that the initial immunization with two doses and the booster inoculation be made in late spring or early summer, immediately before the epizootic season. The vaccination prevented the disease in calves challenged with virulent virus. The vaccine exerted little side effects in cattle. Cows vaccinated during pregnancy gave birth to healthy calves in term. No adverse effects of vaccination on milk production was shown. All these findings indicate efficacy and safety of the vaccine, although the final evaluation rests on largescale field trials.

Notes: Summary The host range of the bovine RS virus, strain NMK7, recovered from a diseased cow during the 1968/69 outbreak in Japan was examined both in experimental animals and cell cultures. The virus strain could be propagated serially in the brain of one-day-old DDY mice, although the virus yield was low and no illness was produced. On the other hand, the virus failed to infect adult DDY mice by various routes of inoculation. Young guinea pigs inoculated with virus intracerebrally, intranasally, intratracheally or intraperitoneally developed no illness but produced low titers of specific neutralizing antibody, indicating the occurrence of an inapparent infection. In tissue cultures, the bovine RS virus showed a wide range of susceptible host cells. It replicated in all cell species (kidney, testicle, thyroid, thymus, duodenum, rectum) of bovine origin as well as in cell cultures from swine (embryonic kidney), hamster (lung, kidney), monkey kidney (Vero), and human (embryonic lung and kidney, HeLa, HEp-2). Better growth was observed in bovine than in human cell cultures. The simultaneously tested human RS virus (strain Long) exhibited a smaller host cell range in cultures of animal provenance and showed optimal growth in human cells. Both virus strains failed to propagate in chicken cells.
