Description / Table of Contents: The ternary compound Li2ZnSi was prepared by heating a mixture of the elements in a Ta crucible in an argon atmosphere at 770°C. It is a bluish grey powder with a metallic luster hydrolyzing in moisture. The x-ray investigation with a single-crystal results in hexagonal symmetry with the lattice constants a = 4.247 Å, c = 8.224 Å, c/a = 1.936 and Z = 2. The structure of Li2ZnSi is related to the Na3As-type structure (DO18, space group P63/mmc): The Si has a hexagonal close packed arrangement; Li (in tetrahedral interstices) and Zn (in triangles of Si) occupy the positions of Na. A distortion of the Zn positions gives a superstructure along [001]
