Notes: Summary The photolysis of ozone in the u.v. Hartley Band produces metastable oxygen atoms and molecules. At wavelengths shorter than 3100 Å the primary quantum yield is probably unity but greater uncertainty exists about its value at longer wavelengths. At 2500 Å, O2(1Δg) is produced with near unit efficiency and there is some evidence that singlet O2 is also a primary prduct at the short wavelenght end of the Huggins band. O2(1 Σ g + ) is not a primary photolytic product at 2500 Å but is produced as a secondary product from the rapid reaction of O(1D) with ground state O2. O(1D) reacts rapidly with O3 although the nature of the products of this reaction has not been unequivocally established and there is now strong evidence against the occurrence of energy chains in dry ozone. The reaction of O(3P) atoms with O3 has been found to have an activation energy of 4.4 kcal mole−1.

Notes: Summary 1. Incubation of high specific activity adenosine-5′-phosphosulfate (AP35S) with crude enzyme fractions or purified APS-sulfotransferase from wildtype and from a mutant which does not grow on sulfate (Sat2 -) leads to binding of label to protein as judged by separation on Sephadex G-25. Crude extracts of mutants Sat1 -, Sat6 -, and Sat7 -R1 lacking APS-sulfotransferase show 10 fold lower binding, indicating that APS-sulfotransferase activity is required. 2. Protein-bound radioactivity is not released by mild acid and exchanges with sulfite excluding bound APS; this suggests a linkage of the organic thiosulfate type (R-S-SO3 -). Labeled protein releases radioactive SO3 2- and GSSO3 - with gluthathione (GS-); with BAL or S2-, SSO3 2- is released. 3. The reaction of APS with APS-sulfotransferase is heat labile, but once bound, the radioactivity is still released by thiols from the heated protein. 4. Aged purified APS-sulfotransferase loses binding activity which is restored by adding the supernatant from heated fresh extract, indicating the participation of a cofactor, consistent with the view that a low molecular weight carrier participates in the main pathway of reduction.

Notes: A direct method for the determination of polytype structures of SiC, ZnS and similar substances from X-ray data is described. It is based on the values of a Patterson-like function (the `Pattersonian') which only depends on the stacking of the translationally equivalent layers of the structure. The way of obtaining the Pattersonian function from the experimental intensities is described and an algorithm given by which the sequence of layers may be deduced. This sequence is conveniently characterized by the sequence of the digits of a binary number. The influence of experimental errors in the intensities on the possibilities of determining the real sequence is discussed.

Notes: The chemically very different minerals aenigmatite and sapphirine are crystallographically closely related, being ordered members of isomorphous families of OD structures consisting of equivalent layers. The symbol of the OD-groupoid family characterizing their symmetry is P1(2/n)l {1(22/c1/2)1 }. Formulae for the structure factor are deduced for the general member of the family and then specialized to explain the diffraction pattern of some members of interest. The twinned structures of aenigmatite, rhönite and krinovite are explained as OD twins; the constituting twin individuals are structures of maximum degree of order corresponding to the OD-groupoid family quoted above.

Notes: A periodic polytype 66R was found to constitute part of a ZnS crystal. Oscillation photographs were taken with Cu Kα radiation. A test was applied to these data showing that the crystal was better approximated by the assumption of a perfect crystal (I ̃|F|), than by that of a mosaic crystal (I ̃|F|2). The method described by Dornberger–Schiff and Farkas–Jahnke in part I is applied to the experimental data and the result discussed. The homometric pair of polytypes with Zhdanov symbols (7753)3 and (7735)3 gives a much better fit to the experimental data (traditional R value equal to 0.147) than any other polytype.

Notes: The cyclicity of a polytype, the percentage of hexagonality, and the distribution of figures `1' among even and odd places of the Zhdanov symbol may be deduced directly from measured intensities. These values are given for a 66R polytype whose sequence has been determined earlier and for a hypothetical 114R polytype. A discussion is given of the errors in these values originating from the errors of the |S|2 values used and of the errors produced, if instead of the exact formula for the cyclicity an approximation advocated by Mardix and his coworkers is used.
